About us
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District oversees a multi-million dollar military construction program at 11 Army and Air Force installations in Georgia and North Carolina and manages water resources across the Coastal Georgia region, including maintenance dredging of the Savannah and Brunswick harbors; operation of three hydroelectric dams and reservoirs along the upper Savannah River; and administration of the Regulatory stream and wetland permitting program within the state of Georgia.

Ralph Werthmann, Real Estate Division chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, celebrated his 36-year career with the Corps during a retirement ceremony. “I’m kind of a low-profile type, so I tried to talk my folks into not doing anything,” said Werthmann. “I don’t think I won that battle.” Having a USACE career that spans several decades, marked by diverse roles and substantial achievement, the District was determined to ensure Werthmann’s departure was anything but ordinary. This week, Savannah District Commander Col. Ron Sturgeon administered the oath of office to our newest team members Caroline Mitchum, Industrial Hygienist, and Billy Smith, Civil Engineer. Both Caroline and Billy are assigned to the Engineering Division. Caroline moved to Savannah with her husband from Atlanta, where she had been working with the Georgia Emerging Infections Program, conducting research on healthcare acquired infections. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Clemson University and a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University. Billy moved to Savannah from Memphis, Tennessee, where he had been working as an intern at the Memphis District in the Geotechnical Department. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Memphis. Welcome to the Savannah District!

For those interested and qualified, there is a great opportunity to serve as the permanent, Savannah District Emergency Management Chief, GS-0089-13. As the EM Chief, you will have the opportunity to help the District prepare for, and lead the response to, hurricanes and other all hazard events. Our EM Chief also plays an important role in our dam and levee safety program and communicating with our partners along the Savannah River system, including three multi-purpose Lake projects.
