The Norman Lear Center is a nonpartisan research and public policy center that studies the social, political, economic and cultural impact of entertainment. The Lear Center conceives of entertainment not just as a leisure activity, and a major sector of the economy, but also as the way messages capture and hold our attention, the way that domains like news, politics, education, religion, commerce and the arts are shaped by their dependence on audiences.

We’re excited to announce our Pa’lante! Latino Representation Initiative, centered on exploring Latino representation in entertainment. We’re launching with a quantitative and qualitative study to explore what it means to be Latino on screen. Future phases may include integrating data on audience and show performance, research on the audience impact of Latino-led stories, interviews with top Latino creatives and decision makers and outreach to the creative community. This will build upon our body of research on representation that has most recently looked at Asian American and Indigenous people on TV. https://lnkd.in/g_7v5U-H #becausestoriesmatter #representation #representationmatters #latinx #tv

Congrats to FX's Reservation Dogs for its multiple #Emmy nominations! In a recent study done in collaboration with IllumiNative Org, we found that when Native representation increased in front of and behind the camera, the nuanced stories had the ability to challenge Native stereotypes, and foster greater support for Native rights. #nativerepresentationmatters
A black dress, bought online, was a small detail that brought home a poignant truth about the challenges women encounter in finding #abortion care in a post-Roe America at Hollywood, Health & Society recent panel: “Abortion 2025: Where Do We Go From Here?”
Decades of research show that accurate portrayals of abortion in TV shows can increase public knowledge and prompt action. In the post-Dobbs era, understanding how these storylines impact viewers is more important than ever. In our recent collaboration with ANSIRH at University of California, San Francisco we surveyed over 1,000 adults and found that viewers of shows with abortion storylines—such as A Million Little Things and Better Things—had greater knowledge about abortion safety and access compared to non-viewers. Those who watched Station 19 were more likely to take action in support of abortion rights. Viewers of these series showed increased knowledge about abortion and were more likely to engage in actions supporting reproductive rights. Accurate TV portrayals can have a real-world impact. https://lnkd.in/gZSsxahN #StoriesMatter #RepresentationMatters
