Smokey Bear’s message of Only You Can Prevent Wildfires is as important in Fall as any time of the year. To drive home this point the USDA Forest Service has put together a fun and educational 4-part series called Smokey Bear Live. Read more about it at https://lnkd.in/gxmRGZEW

Caring for the land and serving people.
About us
The United States Forest Service is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture that administers the nation's 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres (780,000 km2). Major divisions of the agency include the National Forest System, State and Private Forestry, and the Research and Development branch. The mission of the Forest Service is "To sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations." Its motto is "Caring for the land and serving people." As the lead Federal agency in natural resource conservation, the US Forest Service provides leadership in the protection, management, and use of the Nation’s forest, rangeland, and aquatic ecosystems. The agency's ecosystem approach to management integrates ecological, economic, and social factors to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment to meet current and future needs. Through implementation of land and resource management plans, the agency ensures sustainable ecosystems by restoring and maintaining species diversity and ecological productivity that helps provide recreation, water, timber, minerals, fish, wildlife, wilderness, and aesthetic values for current and future generations of people.

As #ClimateWeek2024 winds down, we think it's a good time to remember that research helps us understand the sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and the vital role healthy forests and grasslands play in storing carbon. Forests are the largest terrestrial carbon sink in the world, absorbing carbon dioxide and storing it as carbon in soils and woody plants. Even so, in the U.S., forests, wood products, and urban trees annually offset only a fraction of emissions. Tracking these dynamic processes over vast landscapes is crucially important for understanding and harnessing the power of forests to curb our greenhouse gas footprint.

"Batteries using cellulose nanofibers derived from wood." We don't know about you all, but we're a fan. This is another great example of partnership at work. https://lnkd.in/gvWcS676
Supported by ARPA-E's OPEN 2021 program, the University of Maryland is pioneering fast-charging, solid-state lithium metal batteries using cellulose nanofibers derived from wood. By integrating copper ions, these nanofibers act as solid-state ionic conductors that advance sustainable, high-energy-density batteries. ARPA-E Tech-to-Market Advisor Dr. Apoorv Agarwal and the ARPA-E team visited the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, where these innovative nanofibers are being produced. #ARPAEontheRoad

In honor of National Wilderness Month, today we are highlighting the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute (ALWRI), part of the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Center. This interagency facility has been conducting and sharing science in support of the National Wilderness Preservation System since 1967, and collaborates with Tribal governments, academic institutions, NGOs, and communities across the United States and internationally. You can learn more about ALWRI at their website https://lnkd.in/ggEbij6i. Understanding wildfire risk has never been more important. Especially, as we continue risk reduction work across the country, implementing our Confronting the Wildfire Crisis strategy. The article we just published on our site explores the emergence of a recent tool, RiskMonitor, and how the big-picture perspective it provides is being used to guide our work. https://lnkd.in/gTCVzhM3

This is such an amazing program and we're proud to say we're working with partners on this dam project.
I was excited to join our partners National Forest Foundation, The Coca-Cola Company, and Swire Coca-Cola, USA on the White River National Forest to view a wetland restoration project this past week! This partnership aims to bring back native species and improve water quality and quantity in the Denver area. https://lnkd.in/gF3t-Aiz
