This is our internal communications manager, Devin Owens. She's one of the most visible faces at our company—and that’s intentional. Here's why: In many companies...internal comms often feel invisible, overlooked, and underfunded. Here at Workshop, we’ve flipped this. Devin just led our ‘All Hands’ weekly meeting for the first time. (Think of a mini town hall, but way cooler.) The energy in the room (& on Zoom, hey remotes) felt different...Why? Internal comms is closest to the employee voice. How is this heard? Listening tours, open feedback channels, and surveys. It's the quantitative AND the qualitative...not one or the other. When employees feel heard and recognized, they engage. When employees feel ignored, they disengage. Internal comms teams are strategic partners. Make them visible, and watch the impact. If you only reach out when there’s a typo in the newsletter...you're missing out on a TON of value. TLDR; your IC team knows the vibe. 😉

In a time that can feel dark, we can always find light. It makes it easier, though, when others shine it for us. One of the first to shine their light was the team at Workshop. Workshop is a fantastic email platform for internal communications. I convinced my leadership team to adopt it, and we immediately saw the benefits -- streamlined emails, trackable metrics, the ability to edit together, ghostwrite, and manage inboxes. (Plus, everyone reads emails when there is a super-fun giphy in there!) They have wonderful, educational workshops, and resources (#HappyMondayClub email!) that I used regularly. But even more amazing are the people who work at Workshop. Our contract had renewed *right* before we found out 95% of our government contracts had been cancelled. That meant overnight, more than 200 of us were told we would be laid off. The word "devastated" doesn't even cover it. I believe that internal communicators have an innate mission to help take care of each other. We want to make sure everyone is in the loop, that they have a way to share and vent and build understanding and community. I reached out to the Workshop team, and they responded with understanding and compassion. It wasn't just business to them. They were grieving right along with us. Justin Krug and Grace Kane even followed up to send me interesting internal communications positions they had scouted. Times are uncertain right now. That's why it's even more important to help each other stay informed and connected. If you are interested in making it easier to communicate with employees (Yes! It syncs with Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint, btw), I highly, HIGHLY recommend you check out Workshop. They will take care of you, while you take care of yours. Keep shining that light, team. Thank you for being a bright spot in a scary time. #internalcommunications #employeecommunications #executivecommunications #bethelight #happymondayclub

Employee sentiment is more than just a feeling—it's a business priority! 📊 And internal comms professionals are taking note: 63.7% of IC teams are using employee surveys, which is up from 56.5% in previous years. Why? 👀 Because listening is the first step to real, culture-shifting engagement. When we ask employees how they're doing, what they need to do their jobs better, and where we can improve, we're not just gathering data—we're building trust. This is going to help fuel your company's retention, productivity and culture. To make it even easier, I've rounded up a list of Workshop's employee survey templates (employee engagement, employee pulse, internal comms, and company event feedback) so you can start collecting feedback from your employees ASAP! Just wrapped up an incredible webinar on 'How to Build a Culture of Communication' with Ragan Communications and PR Daily and Workshop's CEO and founder Rick Knudtson's who shared insights on internal communications. One strategy he shared that stood out was his podcasting strategies for reaching employees. Particularly valuable were the practical approaches for engaging frontline staff who aren't desk-bound. Excited to implement these communication tools to strengthen an organization's culture and ensure every team member feels connected, regardless of their role. All my comms folks, tap in! Have you used any of these strategies? What have you implemented within your orgs that's worked (or didn't) and share what industry you're in!

Effective internal communication isn’t just a function—it’s a culture. Yet, many communicators find themselves as task-takers rather than strategic partners. How do we shift this dynamic? Ragan is proud to partner with Workshop for a free webinar on March 13, where CEO Rick Knudtson will explore strategies to build a workplace where communication is second nature. Learn how to elevate internal voices, train leaders, and measure impact. Register now to secure your spot: https://bit.ly/41Nv7F8

As a marketing professional turned internal comms manager, I know how jarring the gap between internal messaging and external marketing can be—but it doesn’t have to be! Internal communications can be just as engaging (aka cool 😎 ) as external campaigns. In this clip from a recent webinar with Kelsey Kingdon, we joined more than 400 #internalcomms professionals to discuss how to create an engaging internal newsletter. You’ll hear me point out that making internal emails look good can feel like a heavy lift—but even the "small" changes can have a big impact, like: ✨ Being intentional about layout and content hierarchy ✨ Ensuring colors are contrasting and accessible ✨ Using photos, graphics, and even GIFs to break up content and add visual interest And my personal favorite: work smarter, not harder with templates!
