Hey there! We’re proud to announce our $10.6M Series A led by Toyota Ventures Climate Fund with participation from the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Lowercarbon Capital, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Pillar VC, and an extended group of climate-committed founders, angels, and family offices: https://lnkd.in/eF4nd9tC We’re biased, but we think measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) in soil carbon is kinda the most important thing to get right. To that end, we’ve spent nearly 3 years in R&D to ensure our spectral soil carbon measurement technology can go the distance. TLDR: It can! 🎉 This round represents our transition from a primary focus on R&D to deploy, deploy, deploy. While we will always have awesome new tech on our roadmap (look out for a 1 m probe, inorganic carbon MRV, and forestry work before long!), the core of our VisNIR spectroscopy platform is ready to go the distance. Critically, we’re not alone in this assessment. Recent consensus on the readiness of soil spectroscopy for carbon has been super-encouraging. For one example, see Verra’s just-published revision to their flagship soil carbon protocol, VM0042, which for the first time now allows spectroscopy for soil C MRV instead of laboratory analysis. We’ve known for some time that we’re working on the right problem, but to see others agree that we’re working with the right technology is massively encouraging. Please reach out if you need soil carbon measured! We’d love to show you what we’ve got, and we’re likely already in your neighborhood. 👋

Measure soil carbon accurately, instantly, and affordably.
About us
Yard Stick measures soil carbon. Scientists and farmers alike know that climate-friendly agricultural practices have the potential to remove atmospheric CO2 at gigaton/year scale. When these practices are adopted, more carbon is stored in soils, improving soil health and fighting climate change. But significant measurement challenges have held soil carbon efforts back - until now. By reducing the cost of soil carbon measurement by 90%+, Yard Stick will dramatically expand the opportunities for evidence-based regenerative practices to simultaneously improve ecosystem health, increase farmer income, and combat climate change.

"As the saying goes, if you can't measure it, you can't manage it." 👏👏👏 Yard Stick is proud to have welcomed Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund to our Series A last year. Thank you Erika for the hat-tip!
Investing in Natural Capital Tools 🌍 Excited to share a blog today highlighting three Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund portfolio companies that are leading the way in how we measure, manage, and regenerate ecosystems: Yard Stick PBC, Vibrant Planet, and our newest investment, Farmland LP. 🌱 Yard Stick PBC is revolutionizing soil carbon measurement with their innovative IoT device and data analytics, providing insights on soil organic carbon at farm scale. 🌲 Vibrant Planet harnesses data-driven science and cloud-based technology to help make communities and ecosystems more resilient in the face of climate change, focusing on wildfire risk mitigation and land resiliency. 🌾 Farmland LP transitions conventional farmland to organic, utilizing regenerative agriculture practices to improve soil health, water retention, and restore biodiversity. Check out the blog to learn more about the challenges facing our ecosystems, how each of these incredible companies uses technology to address these challenges, and why we invested in each of them. Also sharing some lessons learned along the way! We're thrilled to support these amazing Founders, Chris Tolles, Allison Wolff and Craig Wichner, and their respective missions. 🌿#Sustainability #NaturalCapital #Innovation #MicrosoftClimateInnovationFund #ImpactInvesting

Thank you Soil Health Institute, Cristine Morgan, and Jason Ackerson for repping us on the Hill recently! So grateful for our partnership, and especially appreciative of the now years-long support from ARPA-E. Evelyn, it looks like you know what you're doing with that thing! 💪
Members of Congress recently got a look at SHI’s work with Yard Stick PBC to develop an affordable, user-friendly system to measure and monitor soil carbon stocks. At the “Energy Technologies Showcase: ARPA-E Supported Teams on the Hill” event July 30, ARPA-E Director Dr. Evelyn Wang tested out a soil probe and talked with Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Cristine Morgan and Research Soil Scientist and Program Director Dr. Jason Ackerson. Yard Stick’s device measures soil organic carbon in the field, providing accurate real-time data that can aid in carbon removal and sequestration programs.
