The US Minority Contractors Association's STEM Education Foundation (501c3), with its three pillars—Mentorship, Internship, and Scholarship—is dedicated to bringing STEM services to the communities where USMCA members work. Recently, Mr. Christopher Nolen’s after-school Math and Science Club at Irving Middle School (Maywood District 89) visited the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s Addison Creek flood control project, located right in their backyard. Dr. Catherine O'Connor, P.E., Chief Engineer of the MWRDGC and Chair of USMCA's SEF Internship Pillar, arranged for Senior Engineer Michael “Mick” Cosme, P.E., C.F.M., to guide the students through both phases of the project. Steve McChesney, CPESC, with 25 years at Hey and Associates, Inc., and Mr. Bernard Held, P.E., Chair of the SEF Scholarship Pillar from Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, also helped organize this incredible partnership with Maywood District 89 schools. Hey and Associates, Inc. designed the channel improvements that help reduce flood risks for thousands of homes in the watershed. This project allowed us to inspire young minds and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM! The SEF is committed to listening to what our communities need for STEM enrichment. USMCA members practice good citizenship by showing up and making an impact where we live and work. #STEMEducation #Mentorship #Internship #Scholarship #CommunityImpact #USMCA #FloodControl #Engineering #STEMCareers #YouthInspiration
