About us
The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

The United States Air Force has named the 12 Outstanding #Airmen of the Year for 2024 and SrA Jacob Cummings from the 352nd Special Operations Wing will represent Air Force Special Operations Command. Outstanding Airman of the Year represents the service’s top enlisted members from each of the major commands. As an OAY winner Cummings will wear the Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon with the bronze service star device on the ribbon. He will also be authorized to wear the OAY badge for one year from the date of formal presentation. Cummings represents the epitome of an #AirCommando – embodying extreme competency, creative problem solving and a bias for action. Congratulations SrA Cummings and keep up the great work! #AirForce #AirCommando USSOCOM
