About us

The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

In 1978, pioneer #Army Special Forces Col. James Dandridge II retired as a Special Operations Branch Chief in the The Joint Staff. This week, he shared his oral history with U.S. Special Operations Command's history and research team. 🎬 Dandridge was one of the first to wear the US Army Green Beret in 1961 as assistant adjutant of the then U.S. Army Special Warfare Center, under the command of Brig. Gen. William Yarborough, when President John F. Kennedy visited and authorized its wear. He spent most of his military assignments in Special Forces, Special Operations, Psychological Warfare/Operations and Joint Special Operations assignments. Dandridge continued serving our nation for decades in Foreign Service and the Foreign Affairs community post-military with diplomatic missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan. 🇺🇸 #ARSOF #GreenBeret #History #ArmyStrong

“Tradition is very important to our identity as military professionals and the parade is a strong part of that tradition," said #USMC Lt. Gen. Francis Donovan, vice commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. In an historic first for a joint and special operations Marine, Lt. Gen. Donovan hosted the U.S. Marine Corps Evening Parade at the historic 8th and I Marine Corps Barracks Washington D.C., Aug. 16, 2024. The parade honored U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Sims II, Director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Donovan's parade theme and guest list represented the joint and interagency portfolio he holds for USSOCOM. Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., also known as “8th & I,” is the oldest active post in the #Marines. It was founded by President Thomas Jefferson and Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in 1801. “This is going to be one my career highlights returning to the oldest post of the Corps and hosting the parade honoring Lieutenant General Sims,” said Donovan.
