Serving Those Who Served

About us

U.S.VETS is the largest nonprofit organization with boots on the ground to combat America’s veteran homeless crisis head-on. Our holistic approach provides housing, mental health and career programs, and supportive services to help veterans rebuild and thrive. With 40 residential and service sites nationwide, U.S.VETS is uniquely positioned to help veterans and their families successfully transition to civilian life. We provide services to over 3,000 veterans a day. Each year, we help 4,000 veterans a year find housing and connect over 1,000 veterans a year with full-time employment. These struggling veterans represent sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Each has served our country. We share both the pride and problems of this nation’s military servicemen and women and believe we have an obligation to help protect and serve those who have served and protected us. Because of this, we are committed to helping veterans in need. There is a growing generation of veterans with new challenges to face. In the past decade, two million troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. As they return home, many will experience challenges adjusting back to civilian life. Many returning troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression and anxiety. Additionally, some individuals have suffered a probable traumatic brain injury during deployment. The need for support for our nation’s veterans will only continue to increase. Building relationships to work collaboratively and compassionately toward the best outcomes for veterans is a hallmark at U.S.VETS. Last week, our U.S.VETS team members joined fellow thought leaders working across veteran service agencies at the California Department of Veterans Affairs’ 2024 Leadership Summit to discuss meeting the needs of veterans now and in the future. Leaders convening with U.S.VETS CEO Steve Peck included Leo Cuadrado, executive director, New Directions for Veterans; Akilah Templeton, president and CEO, Veterans Village of San Diego; Deb Johnson, commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dept. of California; and Michael Blecker, executive director emeritus, Swords to Plowshares. As the summit wrapped up, a food bundling activity for Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) brought together U.S.VETS’ Cory Cravalho, associate therapist with Outside the Wire; Robert Stohr, executive director of U.S.VETS Los Angeles; Rocio Palmero, program coordinator for Women Vets on Point; and Nicole Starks-Murray, executive director of U.S.VETS Inland Empire. #servingthosewhoserved #honorusvets

Good evening LinkedIn!! This past Saturday, I had the honor of volunteering with U.S.VETS Washington D.C., alongside 8 amazing VA Work-Study students from Howard University’s Office of Military & Veterans Services. We spent the day painting the staff offices of an organization that does so much for those who have served our country. U.S. VETS Washington D.C. provides not only permanent housing but also crucial support like mental health counseling, employment assistance, and suicide prevention for veterans. Their mission resonates deeply with me. As the proud daughter of a U.S. Army veteran who dedicated 26 years of service, I know firsthand the importance of giving back to those who have sacrificed so much. Helping create a welcoming environment for veterans at U.S. VETS was a meaningful way to contribute. It reminded me how small acts of service can make a big difference in the lives of others. To anyone looking for ways to support veterans, I encourage you to get involved with organizations like U.S. VETS. Every bit of help counts. #veteransupport #community #service #gratefulheart #militarychild #HowardUniversity #USVets #GivingBack

Congratulations to U.S.VETS’ Rocio Palmero, a Navy veteran, program coordinator for Women Vets on Point and tireless advocate for women veterans, was honored with a Trailblazer Award by the California Department of Veterans Affairs at its 2024 Leadership Summit. Rocio—among six remarkable women receiving the award—advocates for women veterans struggling with mental health challenges, housing insecurity and childcare needs. She serves on the Los Angeles County Veterans Advisory Commission and volunteers with The American Legion as a district chaplain and vice commander at Post 46 in Culver City. Congratulations to our CEO Steve Peck on his Lifetime Achievement in Service Award from California Department of Veterans Affairs! We’re proud to see you recognized among your peers at CalVet’s annual leadership summit in San Diego. What a fitting tribute for a man who has made it his life’s mission that no veterans sleep on the streets they were asked to defend. Thank you for setting such a positive example of a passionate leader committed to veteran housing and care. We know you’ll continue fighting for veterans in your retirement. He was joined by fellow honoree Michael Blecker, executive director of Swords to Plowshares, who also is retiring this year. Both participated in the “Behind the Vision: Honoring a Legacy in Veteran Leadership” session, where CalVet Secretary Lindsey Sin presented the awards. Undersecretary Keith Boylan also was on hand to congratulate the two leaders. #servingthosewhoserved #honorusvets

Congratulations to CEO Steve Peck on being honored in the Mighty 25 Class of 2024, a national distinction for disrupters forcing change and leaving a notable impact for veterans, military and family members. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better in my life; to be able to do this work and see the impact that we’ve made,” Peck told We Are The Mighty, the digital publisher that names the Mighty 25. He was honored at the Military Influencer Conference, the largest gathering of influential leaders, entrepreneurs and brands in the military space. Juan Hercules graduated high school during a time of conflict. Not in a bygone era but in 2014, the year he became a Marine. Now 29, Hercules spent four years in the 2010s deployed in Eastern and Southeast Asia, mostly in and around Japan. His superiors—many veterans of the Iraq War— mentored Hercules and helped him see bigger geopolitical struggles that were ongoing for the U.S. Hercules served during the longest war in American history, spanning 20 years in Afghanistan. “Everyone seemed to forget about the war, that was their concern,” Hercules says. “It seemed like they were just being phased out, and they worried that the next generation, we wouldn’t be ready for the next conflict." A native of Southern California, Hercules says he missed the sense of purpose and connection he had as a Marine when he returned to civilian life. He arrived at U.S.VETS Inland Empire about a year ago when his sister, a retired Marine staff sergeant, recognized his struggles. “U.S.VETS has shown me there are individuals who do understand and there’s plenty of help here for us to be able to express ourselves,” says Hercules, who plans to finish college and work in U.S. intelligence. “It’s not just talking to my peers. There are Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans, even Korean War veterans. What I appreciate is that some things really haven’t changed, despite the 40 or 50 year age difference. The camaraderie I was missing personally, I was able to find here.” #servingthosewhoserved #honorusvets
