We’re excited to formally welcome former NVIDIA executive Gary Hicok to our team as an advisor. Gary recently retired from NVIDIA as the senior vice president of Automotive Hardware and System where he oversaw the NVIDIA DRIVE platforms used to develop self-driving vehicles. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president of NVIDIA’s core logic business unit and the mobile business unit. During his 25 years with NVIDIA, Gary helped pioneer new technology and grow the company’s edge computing platforms. We’re thrilled he’s chosen to share his time, expertise, and counsel with us as we bring a transformative edge AI platform to market.

Bringing distributed AI to the edge of the grid to accelerate decarbonization and better serve people.
About us
Utilidata is a fast-growing energy technology company using distributed artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the clean energy transition and better serve utility customers. As the electric grid becomes more complex with the rapid increase of electric vehicles, distributed solar, batteries, heat pumps and extreme weather, utilities need real-time visibility of grid conditions. Our distributed AI platform, powered by our custom NVIDIA chip, is transforming the way utility companies operate with real-time visibility at the grid edge to better utilize customer energy resources, reduce power outages, and enable quicker storm recovery. We are a mission-driven, collaborative, and adaptive group of people working to do what’s right, even when it’s hard. With backgrounds in electric engineering, power systems engineering, software engineering, data science, and energy policy, we bring a unique vantage point on the solutions the energy industry needs. We are committed to ensuring a diverse, inclusive, and flexible workplace where employees are provided mentorship and growth opportunities and are empowered to solve problems as part of a collaborative team.

As the first generation of smart meters nears the end of its lifecycle, there’s an urgent need to upgrade to systems capable of supporting AI. "Utilities are facing critical investment decisions as they respond to electricity demand increases, at the very same time that AI is transforming industries across the world. Utilities need to invest in technologies that will provide value for the next two decades, particularly at the grid edge where things are most dynamic." That's why we've combined our expertise with NVIDIA, Hubbell Incorporated, & Deloitte to ensure the grid is ready to meet the industry's rapidly changing needs. We partnered with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) on the first study that leverages distributed AI to explore how EV charging behaviors impact the grid. Our distributed AI platform, Karman, analyzed waveform data at EV charging stations and found that EV charging: - Can cause unexpected rapid swings in current draw - Lowers local voltage significantly - Causes variability in local voltage - Lowers power quality by introducing current harmonics generated from the conversion of AC to DC power - Showed potential to support voltage recovery in the presence of a grid fault ⚡ Karman, powered by a custom NVIDIA module, allows utilities to manage EVs in real-time with unparalleled visibility into the rapidly changing conditions of the grid edge and ensures optimal use of DERs, like EVs, while maintaining grid stability Read more: https://lnkd.in/e44TExiv
