Associate professor of electrical and computer engineering Homa Alemzadeh will work with colleagues from two universities on a $900,000 grant to take the risk out of self-driving vehicles. Many disengagements, or when an autonomous system is turned off for safety reasons, happen when the AI makes wrong decisions, or doesn’t make them in time. Alemzadeh’s project will help identify when and where these systems fail, then design ways to mitigate potential hazards. https://lnkd.in/eC3iCxj2

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to showcase some of UVA Engineering's highlights to a group of researchers from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul who are exploring innovative teaching methods to enhance engineering education in Brazil. This experience prompted me to reflect on how fortunate I am to study here, reminding me of the many positive aspects of UVA Engineering that are often easy to overlook or take for granted. A big thank you to Julia Lapan for connecting me with this incredible group. I am always proud to represent UVA Engineering whenever the opportunity arises. Camila Kolling and Nicole Cecchele Lago I wish you great success with your work! Please feel free to reach out—I'm always happy to continue to contribute to improving education in Brazil. It was a pleasure meeting you all and sharing this wonderful experience.
