Becki Clark’s professional and personal lives collided after a mammogram earlier this year. Clark, the breast imaging coordinator in UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center’s Breast Center for the past 27 years, couldn't help but feel the irony when her routine yearly screening revealed an abnormality in her breast. “I didn’t have any breast problems going into the mammogram. I thought it was going to be like every screening mammogram I have had over the last 10 years," Clark said. "I was completely shocked with the results." Clark's coworkers became part of her care team as she underwent treatment for stage I invasive ductal carcinoma. Read more: https://uw.health/3NwLJJt #breastcancer #breastcancerawarenessmonth

A study led by UW Carbone Cancer Center researchers shows a higher risk of colorectal cancer development and death for African Americans with type 2 diabetes. Their findings help shine a light on how crucial preventive care, like colonoscopies and stool-based cancer screening could be for these at-risk patients. “I think that’s a really important message, because we do think that if someone is up-to-date on their (colorectal cancer) screenings, there’s a potential we can intervene in the relationship of type 2 diabetes to colorectal cancer risk,” said Shaneda Warren Andersen, PhD, senior author on the study and a co-leader of UW Carbone’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program. For years, cancer researchers have noticed that more men than women get a lethal form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. They’ve also found that these tumors are often more aggressive in men. But pinpointing the characteristics that might help doctors forecast which tumors are likely to grow more quickly has proven elusive. Research led by Dr. Pallavi Tiwari, co-director of UW Carbone's Imaging and Radiation Sciences Program, is leveraging artificial intelligence to reveal those risk factors and how they differ between the sexes.
