In the September edition of Provider, the national flagship publication of the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), three HCAD students—Kaylee Tauferner, Kandis Fieber, and Jenna Thieding—were highlighted for their work. In partnership with AHCA/NCAL, these students trained and served as Silver Quality Award Examiners during the Spring semester of 2024. Dr. Frances Maria Hawes facilitates this partnership through her HCAD 301 course. We would also like to highlight the work of HCAD affiliates Cathy Bergland, Meghan (Karstetter) Medvitz, MSHS and Megan Corcoran, NHA, QCP #UWEC #HCAD #LongTermCare #NationalQualityAward

Annabelle Howat ('24) at Marquis Tualatin in Tualatin, Oregon worked on finding a way to decrease the challenges of communicating for patients who are hard of hearing, as well as improve the comfortability of surrounding patients. Through the use of Pocket Talkers, the objective was to improve the quality of care provided to patients who are hard of hearing, enhance the comfortability of surrounding patients, and decrease overall frustration. Post-implementation, survey results showed that nurses were better able to provide for residents, there was a decrease in the number of residents effected by surrounding excess noise, and a decrease in the level of resident and staff frustration. Overall, the use of Pocket Talkers was not only beneficial for the resident themselves, but also staff, family members, and surrounding residents. #UWEC #HCAD #LeadershipProject #residency #PocketTalkers
