Curious and creative problem-solvers committed to the success and wellness of our students and the communities we serve.
About us
CAHSS serves at the intersection of society’s most serious problems and its biggest opportunities. Our College is a place for artists and writers, musicians and storytellers, truth-seekers and policy-makers. We offer a wide spectrum of undergraduate majors and minors, as well as several certificate programs and two graduate programs. Our courses address history and language, psychology and political science, sociology and anthropology, social and criminal justice. CAHSS is where students learn the art and science of being human. Our mission is to harness the transformative power of big ideas and translate them into real-world action. We cultivate curious and creative problem-solvers who leave UWGB prepared to be successful in their personal and professional lives and to build strength in their communities. Our faculty foster critical thinking skills, civic engagement, and innovation in an environment characterized by kindness and cooperation. We value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we guide students to become lifelong learners who are committed to social justice and a more humane future.

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) have some amazing students. We also have some amazing faculty, too. Jennie Young, associate dean and CAHSS professor is just one example. We want to congratulate Jennie on signing a book deal with HarperCollins for Burned Haystack the book! Jennie is the creator of the Burned Haystack Dating Method – an approach to online dating that teaches women how to dissect the communication styles and behavioral patterns in men’s profiles. Her Burned Haystack Facebook group has grown to more than 100,000 followers. If you see Jennie, make sure to congratulate her on her recent success – and stay tuned as she works on her book!

Empathy should come easily for people… right? In her recent TEDxUWGreenBay talk, Assistant Professor Alison Jane Martingano, Ph.D. says psychological research shows otherwise – being empathetic does, in fact, require quite a bit of effort. Empathy, Martingano said, is a muscle. And if we exercise that muscle, it will become stronger and easier to use – just like when it comes to physically working out. Each day, there are a myriad of different experiences that give us the opportunity to practice empathizing – such as reading fiction books. “Fictional characters are also a great way to practice empathizing,” Martingano said. “In this way, we can try to figure out the motives and emotions of the characters.” Want to learn more on how to exercise your empathy? YES! Listen to Kelli!
One of the most cost effective and long lasting ways to develop the social emotional and communication skills described in this article is through in-person, collaborative arts learning. The decline in these emerging workforce skills and the elimination of arts education opportunities in schools are not coincidental. Performing Arts learning is not about discovering the next celebrity performer or a 'job' in the arts. It's about human development and building strong, healthy communities.
