Since 1942, United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) has invested in our 13-county region by bringing people together to give, advocate, and volunteer. Our mission is to link the community’s will and resources to improve lives. UWNNS believes that when the community comes together and puts our resources to work, we can solve our most pressing issues and create opportunities for a better life for all. While many think of United Way as simply an organization that provides funds to other nonprofits, UWNNS is a "Collective Impact" organization. We are committed to listening to our community and bringing together local nonprofits, businesses, elected officials, and community members to collaborate and implement solutions. No one organization can do this alone. It takes the entire community to make change happen. We are supported by an active local board of directors, a dedicated staff team, passionate volunteers, and generous donors who believe in our ability to harness the power of the community to improve lives. Join us. Be a part of the solution in Northern Nevada!

We attended the City of Reno's Third Annual Trunk or Treat! It was a fantastic and rewarding event for our staff. We handed out free books, resources, and, of course, CANDY to the community. It's also great to see organizations such as Northern Nevada Public Health, Reno Police Department, GREAT BASIN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, Asian Community Development Council (ACDC), Reno Fire Department, Reno Parks and Recreation, Wicked Wayz, and many more! #TrunkorTreat #Halloween #CityofReno #Reno #UnitedWay #UWNNS #nonprofit

🍎 United Readers, our signature program, was created to address reading proficiency before the end of third grade. This program, in partnership with AmeriCorps ( Nevada Volunteers), provides one-on-one or one-on-small group phonemic awareness mentorship to children between the ages of 3-9 to prepare them for shifting from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". Below is an everyday story from one of our United Readers mentors: 🦔 "I've been working with Aaron on how to keep his attention during lessons. I've made his time with me one-on-one and that has seemed to help. We've used manipulatives like white boards and magnetic letters which have also helped. Today, Aaron brought a small hedgehog figurine with him. I began talking to Mr. Hedgehog asking him if he knew the first sound in "small." He then moved the hedgehog to the correct flashcard. I continued asking him what blend he heard in the beginning of each word. Mr. Hedgehog got them all right! We then went on to the next lesson asking if Mr. Hedgehog knew the middle sounds and he did the rollercoaster hand motion with us etc. I praised Mr. Hedgehog and gave him many high fives during our lesson because he knew almost everything we were working on. He even got to pick his own sticker out at the end for being such an awesome hedgehog Heggerty Hero. It was amazing to see how in tune Aaron became when his little toy hedgehog became a part of what we were learning. He was beaming from ear to ear when his hedgehog got the answers right. I knew in the beginning Aaron understood the concepts but was not participating due to distractions. When he could pretend play, he was able to focus being the Hedgehog and focus on finding the answers. Just having the time to do this one-on-one with him and having the patience to facilitate his learning through a toy was a key to his learning and capabilities. It doesn't always work out so well but when you find something that does work, it's awesome." - Tracy A., United Readers Mentor at Maxwell Elementary (May 2024) 💡 Learn more about United Readers at: https://lnkd.in/gfw49-7p #earlychildhoodeducation #CommunityImpact #nonprofitlife
