BELOW THE CRIME: Designing an App to Empower Pedestrians https://shorturl.at/brBCF Project Overview I was commissioned to design the user experience and interface for "Below the Crime", a safety app that alerts pedestrians to potential dangers in their vicinity. The Challenge While walking, it can be difficult to stay aware of one's surroundings and safety risks. The app needed to inform users discreetly without causing undue anxiety. Design Approach Through user research, I developed: Intuitive notification types like on-screen warnings and haptic alerts Map views with real-time crime incident reports Customizable alert preferences based on factors like time of day Anonymized crime data upload functions to crowdsource risk insights Outcomes Usability testing showed the discreet alert styles enhanced situational awareness. Location-based features empower data-driven route choices. The app aims to support active communities through helpful information, not fear. An engaging yet calming user experience helps pedestrians feel safer and more informed while on the move.
