Securing SaaS-hosted data and the critical business processes that SaaS applications help power is a shared responsibility. The SaaS provider is responsible for securing the underlying infrastructure of the application, including secure code, vulnerability management, network security, and providing a secure platform design. SaaS customers, on the other hand, are ultimately responsible for securing access to the data in their accounts. This includes enforcing strong authentication, restricting access, governing SaaS-to-SaaS integrations, and implementing basic security hygiene. most notably, detection of misconfigurations and configuration drift falls under the customer's responsibility. The recent attack campaign targeting Snowflake customers serves as an important reminder. 🛡️ Cybersecurity Awareness Month: The SaaS Security Imperative 🛡️ The findings from our 2024 State of SaaS Security Report reveal an interesting paradox: Despite the overwhelming prioritization of SaaS security by security executives (96% identifying it as a high or top priority), a staggering 58% of organizations have experienced a SaaS security incident in the past 18 months. This gap between perception and reality points to a critical challenge: even as confidence remains high (84% of security leaders are "extremely" or "very" confident in their SaaS security programs), the rise of SaaS breaches—like the recent widespread attacks targeting Snowflake customers—serves as a reminder of how vulnerable SaaS ecosystems can be. From misconfigurations and over-permissioned integrations to unsecured non-human identities, the risks are real.
