As National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) comes to a close this week, we want to celebrate the inspiring journey of Aiden Mullen, a valued participant in VFES’ Customized Workforce Solutions (CWS) program. Aiden faced significant frustrations in his job search before joining CWS as he struggled to navigate the application process. However, with the support of his CWS Employment Specialist, Bryan Horsey, Aiden found meaningful employment at Giant Food Stores, where he has truly excelled in his position as Store Associate. Aiden shares, “Having Bryan to contact when I’m frustrated or don’t understand things at work has been incredibly helpful.” Aiden also relates that Bryan’s dedication and support have been instrumental in his growth. When discussing Aiden’s progress, Bryan states, “I believe CWS’ support has given Aiden more confidence and has also encouraged him to pursue his personal goals. Aiden has matured tremendously as an adult and through his workplace successes and is now ready to pass his driving test and grow his social network.” Aiden’s journey serves as an inspiration to others. When asked what advice he’d give to other adults with disabilities who struggle with finding or keeping employment, Aiden says, “Ask for help when you need something done.” We are proud to celebrate Aiden’s achievements and the positive impact CWS is having on him, and other neurodiverse individuals that we serve. Aiden’s success story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when individuals receive the help they need to thrive in work and life. CWS is a cornerstone of VFES' Continuum of Services, offering both Vanguard School alumni and job seekers in the community who meet assessment requirements a seamless transition from education to employment. Please consider supporting the neurodiverse individuals who are realizing their potential as contributing members of the community through the vital educational, clinical, employment, social and recreational programs that we offer. Marc Brutten, the son of our founder, Dr. Milton Brutten, came to campus today to meet with Executive Director, Tom Quinn, and Director of Development, Kevin Kane. Marc spent some time at our student-run Phin’s Café, which he supported with a generous donation, and also took a tour of our new student-run auto detailing shop. Marc also met with members of our Customized Workforce Solutions (CWS) team to learn more about our employment, social and recreational services for students and adults with disabilities after they turn 22. Marc shared that he used to ride horses where our walking track is now and enjoyed spending the day seeing how his father’s legacy continues to expand here at VFES. We are incredibly grateful to Marc and his family for all of their support and look forward to welcoming him back soon!

Meet Allie Love, a valued participant in VFES’ Customized Work Solutions (CWS) program. Allie has embraced her role as a part-time employee at a café in a senior residential facility, where she finds joy in connecting with the residents. Before joining CWS, she faced challenges finding a job due to limited experience. However, with the support of CWS, she discovered roles that suited her interests and gained the confidence and valuable skills that enabled her to pursue her career goals. Allie shares, "CWS helped me find jobs I really liked. With my employment specialist’s guidance, I learned new skills every day and became more independent and flexible in my role." Allie’s mother, Frances, is proud of her daughter’s journey. She emphasizes how CWS has been instrumental in supporting Allie every step of the way. “CWS listened to Allie’s interests during her initial assessment and helped her explore various job opportunities. They assisted her in formulating a strong resume that highlighted her skills and volunteer experience. Throughout her job search and training, the CWS team provided essential encouragement and guidance. Thanks to Allie's perseverance and the support from her employment specialist, she found a job she truly enjoys.” CWS not only assists individuals like Allie in securing employment but also provides individualized support on the job, as needed. As Allie advises others, “Find a program like CWS that listens to your needs and helps you through the process. Keep trying, and be patient with yourself.” We’re privileged to witness Allie’s career journey and hope her story inspires others to explore CWS! VFES’ Customized Workforce Solutions (CWS) helps place adults with disabilities into employment positions and offers other employment-related services. CWS focuses on the needs, skills, interests, preferences, and goals of each individual to find a great position they’ll thrive in.
