It’s #ThrowBackThursday in the MAG region! We’re looking back at the progress we have made since Valley Metro light rail began service in 2008. Thanks to funding from #Prop400 and the investment from our local cities, light rail will be celebrating its Sweet 16 this year! Here are a few milestones: 🔹 On December 27, 2008, the first 20 miles of the light rail system began service and connected residents from Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. 🔹 In 2015, the system was extended 3.1 miles through downtown Mesa along Main Street to Mesa Drive. 🔹 In 2016, light rail extended an additional 3.2 miles to 19th Avenue and Dunlap Road in Phoenix. 🔹 In 2019, construction began on the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub, which will extend light rail south to Baseline Road in South Phoenix. With the opening of this extension in 2025, Valley Metro will also introduce a two-line light rail system that includes a transit hub in downtown Phoenix. 🔹In 2019, light rail was extended 1.9 miles from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road in Mesa as part of the Gilbert Road Extension project. 🔹 On January 27, 2024, the Northwest Extension Phase II was completed. This project extended the light rail system to 30 miles and included the first-ever elevated train station and the first rail-only bridge over a freeway in our region. Valley Metro RPTA
