  • The verdict is in! There’s no reason to work 5 days a week. Some companies have been talking about adopting a 4-day work week for a while. Now, studies are proving its success! 33 companies in the US and Ireland switched from 5 days to 4 during a 6-month trial period. At the end of the 6 months, 27 completed a survey about their overall experience. Here are the results, courtesy of 4 Day Week Global: 18 are keeping the 4-day week 7 are planning on continuing the 4-day week, but haven’t confirmed it yet 1 is leaning towards continuing the 4-day week 1 is unsure Companies also saw a 37.55% revenue increase compared to the same six-month period the year before. Employees in the trial were just as enthusiastic as their employers. On a satisfaction scale of 0 - 10, employees rated their average overall experience a 9.1. Also, 67% of employees said they were less burned out during the period. Employees also exercised 23.7 minutes more per week and enjoyed a better work-life balance.   • Major brands are setting new employee engagement standards. Here’s what they’re doing: Mastercard Mastercard has 100,000+ employees worldwide. Keeping everyone engaged is no small feat. Their plan: Fostering a learning environment: Employees are given development cards to outline their career paths to maximize their chance of success. Focus on employee development: Mastercard uses an AI program to evaluate the skills their employees need, and uses this info to help train them.  Holistic perks: The company policy for work-life balance is “when you feel well, you live well — personally and professionally.” Salesforce Salesforce’s employee engagement strategy relies on data and technology to analyze and strengthen connections between employees, managers, and their organization. Their plan: Selective automation: Salesforce balances technology and human interaction by automating some processes, but ensuring managers and employees still have enough time to interact. Extensive onboarding: All new hires are in a year-long marketing group for proper training before officially working.  Health-focused: Employees have a wellness reimbursement program that offers employees $100/mo for activities like gym classes, nutritional therapy, and concerts. Kaiser Permanente Kaiser is committed to creating a healthy, well-engaged workforce.   • What do massive layoffs at large companies mean for you? Opportunity. During the tech layoffs in one round: Amazon laid off 10,000 people in corporate and tech jobs Meta laid off 11,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce Google laid off 10,000, or 6% of its “lowest-performing” employees However, while large companies were leaning out and finding ways to navigate their slow down, there were tons of growth opportunities for smaller companies and people looking for work. While these large companies were laying people off, there were  5.75 million people unemployed, and there were 10.7 million job openings. In other words, there were nearly 5 million more jobs than people to fill them. At the height of the 2008-2009 recession, there were only 2 million job openings and 15 million people unemployed.     How productive are your employees? According to career experts at Zippia, here are a few shocking statistics about average employee productivity in the U.S.: The average employee is distracted every 3 minutes. After getting distracted, it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to refocus. A single distraction can eat up 26 minutes and 15 seconds of a workday. The average office employee is only productive for 31% of an average 8-hour workday, or 2 hours and 53 minutes.  The average employee is productive for 60% of their workday, or 4 hours and 48 minutes.  That’s a difference of 1 hour and 55 minutes, or nearly ¼ of the workday! 66% of employees believe they would be more productive if they worked from home.  Workers are 13% more productive when working from home. 13% may not sound like a lot, but that time accumulates very quickly.
