  • Today’s spotlight is on Dr. Breann Tisano, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. She has dual fellowship training in pediatrics and sports medicine. In her words: "I take care of bone and joint injuries in all types of children, but have a specific interest in the care of youth athletes, including those with complex considerations such as the growing child or adaptive athlete. "As a native of Middle Tennessee, I know firsthand the impact Vanderbilt Health, and specifically the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has in this region. As an active teenager, I received care from the pediatric orthopedic division here that enabled me to continue my own athletic career throughout high school. It is truly a privilege to be able to serve the children and families in our community in the same manner. "Outside of work, I love to spend time with family, entertain friends, attend sporting events, listen to audiobooks and travel. "My favorite places to be in Nashville are Titans games! And anywhere with live music." Vanderbilt Health is a dynamic, growing health care system, and every member of the workforce plays an important role in making health care personal. "The people you work with are really what makes an organization great. It's not the name. It's the people who make the name great." - Ray Vaughns Jr., MBA It is all about the people who make the names great and deliver the care. I was preparing for a talk yesterday and watched this video (I need to watch it more often). This video make me proud of what a special place Vanderbilt University Medical Center is and what a privilege it is to work in #healthcare and be part of the team. "It amazes me how it works. How it comes together and works." - Vince Abler #teamwork Cheers to all those making a difference and for contributing to the well being of others and making the name great.

  • Jeffrey Upperman, MD, surgeon-in-chief at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, sat down with our news team to discuss the importance of understanding how these disasters impact children. Dr. Upperman is among the authors of the "Pediatric Disaster Science Series" from the National Academy of Medicine. The series released last month emphasizes the need to formalize response, research and care just as the nation is gripped by scenes of destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Helene. “Many of us in the field felt we needed to make strong statements on what we believe are responsible frameworks for filling gaps in the work around disasters at large. It’s not just about a pandemic or natural disasters; it’s about understanding what a framework would look like for understanding these problems in a prospective way, particularly around children," said Upperman. • Dr. Monica Rossi Meyer is a surgeon with specialized training in the areas of facial reconstruction, facial rejuvenation and facial nerve rehabilitation, as well as functional and cosmetic nasal operations. She started in September and sees patients at the Vanderbilt otolaryngology clinics in Lebanon and at One Hundred Oaks, as well as the Veteran Affairs Medical Center. In her own words: “I am originally from Central Illinois, and attended undergrad and medical school through the University of Illinois. After medical school, I completed residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ENT) at the University of Iowa, and a fellowship in facial plastic & reconstructive surgery at Stanford University. I am married and my husband is a software engineer. We currently have one son and a dog. Since I just started a few weeks ago, I have really enjoyed meeting the friendly teams in the clinics and operating rooms. "Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, being outdoors and staying physically active. So far, we have really enjoyed jogging on the Stones River Greenway, taking our son to the Nashville Zoo and Adventure Science Center and visiting Arrington Vineyards. We are looking forward to visiting more of the museums, restaurants and music venues in the area.” Vanderbilt Health is a dynamic, growing health care system, and every member of the workforce plays an important role in making health care personal.
