Expanding the economic bounds of humankind.
About us
Low Earth orbit is open for business. Varda is accelerating the development of commercial space infrastructure, from in-orbit pharmaceutical processing to reliable and economical reentry capsules. Reusable rockets have lowered the cost of access to space and opened up a range of in-space activities. Now that access to space is cheap, it’s what we do there that counts. From new, life-saving pharmaceuticals to more powerful fiber optic cables, there is a world of products used on Earth today that can only be manufactured in space. Varda is accelerating innovation in the orbital economy and creating products that will benefit life on Earth. Our mission is to expand the economic bounds of humankind.

Today Varda received authorization from the Australian Space Agency for multiple W-series vehicle reentries into the Koonibba Test Range, hosted by our friends at Southern Launch. We’re honored to perform Australia’s first commercial space reentry. This authorization makes Varda the first company to be able to reenter spacecraft on land in two countries, ushering in a global economy where reentry is as common as launch. Soon low earth orbit will simply be another place where materials are processed.

We are looking forward to presenting research at the AAPS and AIChE conferences later this month. Varda Chief Science Officer Adrian Radocea will give an oral presentation at the annual meeting of AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers describing Varda's hypergravity research. Senior Product Engineer Haley Bauser will present a poster at American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) | @aapscomms detailing the successful crystallization of a metastable form III of Ritonavir during Varda's first mission in orbit, alongside our partners IMPROVED PHARMA, LLC. Get in touch to meet up if you will be in Salt Lake City or San Diego, and stop by Varda's talks on pharmaceuticals in space. 💊 https://lnkd.in/g9XqQNNW

Don't miss our VP of Biopharma BD Mark Herbert at the Octane OC Medical Innovation Forum tomorrow. Mark and panelists will discuss the impact of emerging technologies on healthcare and medtech, including the ways microgravity can benefit pharmaceutical processing. https://lnkd.in/eMPMQegZ
Join me at Octane’s Medical Innovation Forum at the Irvine Marriott in Irvine, California, on October 8-9. I’m excited to be part of a panel discussion on October 8 from 9:10-10:00 AM, titled “The Impact of Emerging Technologies on Healthcare and MedTech.” The healthcare and MedTech sectors are undergoing rapid transformation with the advent of AI, robotics, 3D printing, wearables, and space-based drug development. These technologies are revolutionizing care delivery, enhancing diagnostics, and more. Our discussion will delve into the significant effects of microgravity on drug development, the evolution of surgical practices through robotics and precision instruments, and the pivotal role of data analytics in boosting operational efficiency and patient outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gZSSi9t7

In addition to growing launch cadence, spaceflight will also begin to include regular Earth returns. We’ll have to adapt the regulatory regime to keep pace by augmenting existing regulations with standard safety metrics, argues CEO Will Bruey in an op-ed for Payload this week. "The existing regulations’ bottom-up approach was valid when launch was nascent, but as the industry matures, defining more standards will allow more companies like Varda to lift industrial operations off our home planet and bring back the goods at scale." Today we’re announcing a research collaboration with SSPC, Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals, to develop mathematical modeling of gravity’s role during crystallization. This is the first model of its kind to link polymorphism to gravity, and leads to a deeper understanding of which medicines are most likely to be improved via processing in microgravity. "While the behavior of fluids in microgravity is well understood, the link between fluid motion and crystallization outcomes—especially with respect to changes in the resulting crystal structure—remains largely unexplored," said Varda Chief Science Officer Adrian Radocea. "Our research collaboration with SSPC lays the foundation for directly understanding polymorphic outcomes from first principles, taking into account molecule-specific parameters, as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics that underpin crystallization." https://lnkd.in/g_kEZEDv

We are happy to announce that Varda received our FAA reentry license for our upcoming second mission launching in early November. This flight will advance pharmaceutical research as well as fly several payloads in support of NASA and other government partners. It's an honor to work with @FAANews’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation towards a shared vision of safe, high-cadence transit to and from a thriving orbital economy. This license represents a lot of collaborative work and we look forward to many more missions to come. (📸 Thanks to Rocket Lab!)
