Wash your hands for how long? 15 seconds? 20 seconds? 20 to 30? Happy bday song? Yes... different organizations have different guidelines. From a regulatory perspective, if you say you're going to follow a certain guideline, you must train your staff to that guideline. If you put it in policy, you will be held to it. From a patient safety perspective, think of it not as a certain time constraint. Instead, think of it as: you should go through the steps of proper hand hygiene, and it should take 15...20... even 25 seconds if you're doing it right. Regarding alcohol based hand rub, it's typically a metered dose. The amount that is dispensed should keep your hands wet for about 20 seconds. We have dispensers that monitor certain data points.
