VBFA is honored to have been invited by Holli Adams, Principal Architect at Architectural Nexus, to attend the celebration of the Salt Lake County Daybreak Library—Utah’s first Certified Zero Energy Commercial Building! Our team, led by Spencer Howell played a key role in the mechanical design of this sustainable project helping the library achieve exceptional energy performance: - 500+ solar panels generate 102% of the library’s energy needs, giving back to the power grid - Thermal wells beneath the library provide ground-source energy, using the Earth’s heat to warm water for the library during winter - Sun tubes integrated into the rooftop garden, combined with expansive windows throughout the building, flood the interiors with natural light, significantly reducing the need for artificial lighting, creating a welcoming and sustainable space This project showcases the impact of thoughtful engineering, community input, and a commitment to sustainability. Thank you, Holli, for including VBFA in this celebration and for your leadership in designing a building that serves both the environment and the community. #netzeroenergy #sustainableengineering #netzeroengineering #mechanicalengineering #sustainability

We're excited to see this project take shape!
Exciting progress is happening at Brigham Young University–Hawaii! During the 2024 Ohana Meeting, the campus community received updates on the transformative McKay Complex replacement project. The latest renderings reveal more of the vision for replacing existing facilities with five new buildings that will reshape the heart of campus in the coming years. Since leading the master planning effort in 2020, VCBO has worked closely with university leaders to reimagine its spaces with flexibility, an enhanced student experience, and the university’s mission in mind — setting the course for the next 50 years. The more than 300,000-square-foot complex will house a welcome center, classrooms, offices, conference spaces, an auditorium, campus services, and vibrant student life spaces, all designed with architectural themes and forms that honor Hawaii’s cultural heritage. Building plans are currently in the review and permitting phase, with groundbreaking anticipated in the summer of 2025 and final completion in 2031. We are thrilled to see this monumental project continue to take shape and look forward to the transformation of the beautiful Laie campus. #HigherEducation #EducationDesign #CampusDesign #VCBOArchitects

We're thankful to have had the opportunity to help this amazing facility meet its sustainability and Net Zero goals!
Last night, Utah Clean Energy unveiled their newly renovated Climate Innovation Center to ULI Utah over drinks and insightful conversation. This event allowed a small group to explore the center, which functions as a living laboratory to demonstrate cutting-edge sustainable building and operating practices. The building's understated yet approachable design serves as a model for any office space, highlighting how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated without compromising aesthetics. Kevin Emerson, M.Sc. presented on the planning process, covering critical aspects such as energy modeling with a zero energy target and evaluating the building's embodied carbon. During the discussion, Kevin stressed the significance of events like this one for inspiring other builders and developers, encouraging open dialogue and fostering collaboration in the pursuit of innovative climate solutions. A huge thank you to Utah Clean Energy for having us!

Backpacks and Big Smiles! VBFA joined the Valleywise Backpack Donation Drive, spreading joy and support to families and students. VBFA had a blast participating in the 2024 Valleywise Backpack Donation Drive at the Mesa Valleywise Community Health Family Resource Center! We loved seeing the kids' faces light up as they picked out their favorite-colored backpacks to start the school year. A big shoutout to Steve Rajakovich and the Valleywise Health Foundation team for organizing this wonderful event. For over 15 years, they’ve been empowering young students in Arizona with school supplies, helping them stay engaged in their education. Here’s to community, education, and brighter futures! #Valleywise_az #BackpackDrive #ValleywiseHealthFoundation #CommunityHealth #BackToSchool #VBFAengineering #SustainableEngineering

We are proud to spotlight our journey in transforming healthcare in rural communities through the design and renovation of Critical Access Hospitals. With projects spanning from Cedar City Hospital in Utah to Bridgton Hospital in Maine, our commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality is unwavering. As Utah's top healthcare engineers, we understand that every element of a hospital's design impacts patient care. In rural settings, where resources are often limited, efficient MEP systems ensure reliability, sustainability, and the adaptability needed to meet the unique challenges these communities face. Additionally, we design with climate resilience and healthy indoor environments at the forefront.
