March 9 – 15th is Virginia Flood Awareness Week. 🌊 Virginia’s history is shaped by storms like Hurricane Gaston (2004), which caused severe flooding and infrastructure damage. Each storm teaches us valuable lessons about resilience and preparedness. By learning from the past, we’re building a stronger future. From Hurricane Helene’s impact in Grayson County (2024) to Hurricane Irene’s aftermath in Essex County (2011), these storms remind us why flood resilience matters. 📌 See how VDOT is working to protect Virginia’s roads from future flooding and learn more about our flood resilience efforts: https://bit.ly/4hv6ilS #FloodAwareVA #FloodSafety #VDOTResilience

🚦⏳💡 Years of expertise, countless hours of work, and a lasting impact on Virginia’s roads. See how VDOT’s Richmond Traffic Signals team improved safety, efficiency, and sustainability on Midlothian Turnpike. A big thank you to Sunil G., John V., Richard B. and Joseph S. of the Richmond District! 📖 Swipe through to learn more! If you'd like to read the full story, see below: The Midlothian Turnpike corridor was notorious for numerous complaints from drivers regarding poor driving experience and frequent crashes. When Sunil Gyawali joined the Richmond District Traffic Signals team in early 2024, he jumped right into a signal retiming project with consultant partners from Kimley-Horn. The project’s goal was to enhance the corridor's efficiency, saving motorists time and money while bolstering safety. By May 2024, Sunil and the Traffic Signals team successfully implemented a coordinated timing plan for 32 intersections spanning from Route 7225 (Watkins Center Parkway) to Donald May Jr. Drive. This new plan allows groups of vehicles to navigate through the traffic signals with a lesser number of stops, significantly reducing the risk of crashes at intersections and improving commute times. As a result of these improvements, drivers passing through the corridor will experience reduced wait times at red lights, estimated to save approximately $5 million in travel time and $240,000 in fuel costs over the course of a year. Moreover, the benefits extend to environmental gains, with an expected annual reduction of about 35,000 pounds of carbon monoxide emissions. These enhancements promise lasting positive effects on both commuter experience and environmental quality along the corridor.
