About us

The credit union was originally chartered in 1947 as Austin Municipal Federal Credit Union to serve City of Austin employees. In 1998, we moved from a federal to a state charter, and became Austin Metropolitan Financial Credit Union (AMFCU) to better reflect the changes in our membership. In January 2003, we changed our name to Velocity Credit Union. We took all the good things about AMFCU and added a more open membership to create a credit union with new energy and purpose. You can count on us to continually provide you with a full array of financial products and services to meet your needs now, and in the coming years as your needs change. Today, we’re one of the largest and strongest credit unions in the state of Texas. We have over $1 billion in assets, and serve more than 88,000 members.

Velocity Credit Union is spotlighting and celebrating employees for Hispanic Heritage Month. This week’s spotlight employee is Frank, he is on Velocity’s Accounting & Finance team and has been with Velocity for 6 years! What does Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month mean to you? It’s a reminder of where I come from and re-visiting my roots. Being able to hear the music and taste the traditional foods of our past that are shared today is a great feeling of being able to connect with our ancestors. As the times are evolving and moving fast, it can be easy to lose touch of the people before us, who helped pave the way to give us the opportunities we have today. This month is a great time to take a moment and soak up the history and enjoy the fruits of our labors. Having the opportunity to celebrate our contributions, food, culture, and music with others in this country is a blessing and a privilege. How important is representation to you in the workforce and community? It is very important to have that representation in the workforce. When people see themselves in us, I believe it helps build a sense of comfort and confidence in wanting to do business and build a relationship with someone who may understand where they are coming from. When I used to work in the branch, it felt great being able to assist my Spanish-speaking members and share with them the financial knowledge I have picked up, so they too may be able to apply it and feel more confident in banking. What advice would you give to Hispanic professionals looking to get into your field? I’d say, if you have an interest then go for it. It may not be that immediate position you may have been looking for, but we all must start somewhere. Prove to yourself and others what you’re capable of and soon more opportunities will open along the way. Use what you know along with your cultural background to your advantage and keep an open mind to learning. Thank you, Frank, for sharing with us; we appreciate all your hard work and dedication!

Velocity Credit Union is spotlighting and celebrating employees for Hispanic Heritage Month. This week’s spotlight employee is Aaldrik, he is on Velocity’s Member Services team at the Southwest Austin branch and has been with Velocity for a year! What does Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month mean to you? Latinx Heritage Month is deeply meaningful to me as a Mexican. It’s a time to celebrate both the broader Latinx culture and my Mexican traditions, reflecting on our rich customs, language, and art. This month honors the contributions of Latinx individuals, past and present, and highlights the achievements of our community. It’s also an opportunity to advocate for greater visibility and representation, share our stories, and address challenges. Overall, it’s a chance to take pride in our heritage and work towards a more inclusive future. I am grateful for the diversity of cultures and the opportunity to be part of this great country. What advice would you give to Hispanic professionals looking to get into your field? As a Latinx professional, my advice is to embrace your heritage and the unique perspectives it offers, using them to advance your career. Build a robust network with fellow Latinx professionals and mentors to unlock opportunities and receive valuable guidance. Stay confident and resilient when facing challenges, and advocate for increased representation and support for Latinx individuals in your field. By leveraging your strengths and maintaining perseverance, despite obstacles, while fostering a supportive community, you can make a significant impact and inspire others. Who has been an inspiration to you? My dad, Ignacio Mariscal, has been a profound inspiration to me. Throughout my life, he has consistently prioritized his family, demonstrating unwavering commitment and dedication. He has faced numerous challenges with resilience and grace, always emerging stronger and more determined. His ability to navigate difficult times while maintaining a positive outlook has taught me the importance of perseverance and strength. Additionally, my dad has been a steadfast advocate for our values and heritage. He takes immense pride in our Latin roots, instilling in me a deep respect for our culture and traditions. His enthusiasm for celebrating our heritage and promoting the values we hold dear has shaped my own identity and values. His example of leadership, integrity, and dedication continues to inspire me to strive for excellence and uphold the principles he has imparted to me. Thank you, Aaldrik, for sharing with us; we appreciate all your hard work and dedication!

Joining hands with our community members as we tackle issues of affordable housing across Texas is a matter of time and resources. This initiative led by Austin Habitat for Humanity not only gives us the ability to help as a credit union, but as an institution dedicated to increasing homeownership accessibility. Special shout out to the partnering credit unions helping drive this mission forward! UFCU Austin Telco Federal Credit Union Greater Texas Credit Union The Austin Chapter of Credit Unions

Last week, we proudly raised the walls on the fifth home built by local credit unions as part of the House that Credit Unions Built initiative. This home will soon belong to an Austin ISD employee, marking another milestone in our collective effort to create affordable homeownership opportunities. It’s truly inspiring to see how credit unions across the region are coming together to build a brighter, more stable future for our community. Thank you to all our credit union partners who make this possible! UFCU Austin Telco Federal Credit Union Greater Texas Credit Union The Austin Chapter of Credit Unions Velocity Credit Union

Velocity Credit Union is spotlighting and celebrating employees for Hispanic Heritage Month. This week’s spotlight employee is Michelle, she is on Velocity’s Human Resources team and has been with Velocity for three months! What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Our background has made us into who we are today. Strong, independent, hardworking people with a vision for unity and community. No matter the past hardships or troubles we faced, our Hispanic heritage stays with us because it is a part of who we are. Hispanic Heritage Month is a way to celebrate our cultural backgrounds and diversity in our community. For me, it means being appreciative of the sacrifices my parents made to give my siblings and me access to a better life. What advice would you give to Hispanic professionals looking to get into your field? You must do the hard work, put in the necessary time, and pursue opportunities that come along the way. It will be uncomfortable before it gets comfortable, but it’s worth the wait! Remember that your background makes you special and different from everyone else; be proud of who you are. Always remain true to yourself, learn from others, be patient, and remember to be kind. Tell us about a moment in Hispanic history that influenced or shaped your career. This just happened when I was watching the Emmys the other day. I just watched the new season of The Bear and was happy to see that in some of the episodes, the show dived into the backstory of a character named Tina who is played by actress Liza Colón-Zayas. The show portrayed the struggles she faced being Latina, old-fashioned, and not technologically educated while trying to find a job. Her character carried so much depth, so much meaning, and people could relate to her. I was so happy when Liza won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She was the first Latina to win this award and that right there is history in the making. During her speech, she mentioned that she didn’t prepare a speech because she didn’t believe it was possible for someone like her to win. Mentioning, “All the Latinas who are looking at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights. Thank you... Gracias.” This inspired me to continue to look at the bigger picture, believe in myself, and remain humble. I am grateful to work for such a great company like Velocity and to be a part of a diverse cultural community where I can share my thoughts and ideas. Thank you, Michelle, for sharing with us; we appreciate all your hard work and dedication!
