Ergonomics Truths and Myths were revealed at the Verdantix #EHSSummit today! Blake McGowan, CPE shared surprising findings, breaking down common myths around workplace ergonomics and setting the record straight. Here’s a quick recap of what really drives effective ergonomic programs. To kick off the session, McGowan clarified the definition of ergonomics as designing the workplace to optimize human performance. He then engaged the audience with a quick survey, asking us to identify the leading physical risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs): Repetition, Awkward Postures, Forceful Exertions, or Vibration. Most hands went up for Repetition—but the real answer, backed by decades of research, is Forceful Exertions. This exercise made attendees realize how myths can make us focus on and measure the wrong thing. The Myths and Realities: Myth #1: “AI alone can manage MSDs and injuries.” 💡 Truth: An effective program requires a well-documented management system, not just AI. Myth #2: “Only experts can effectively assess and improve ergonomics.” 💡 Truth: A participatory approach, involving employees directly, produces the best results. Research shows these programs outperform expert-only approaches. Myth #3: “Traditional tools like REBA and RULA are all we need.” 💡 Truth: These older tools (25+ years old) don’t reflect the latest science about what causes injuries. Bonus Myth: “All AI tech is equally effective.” 💡 Fact: Many AI tools use data from generic applications (like animation or entertainment) and may not accurately assess workplace MSD risk. Choose tech carefully for relevant ergonomic insights. Key Takeaways: Build a participatory, system-based approach and choose the right tools for success in #ergonomicsmanagement!

Insightful opening session today by David Metcalfe (CEO, Verdantix) and John Fisher (Director of Environmental Strategy, Duke Energy) at the Verdantix #EHSSummit entitled "EHS Hot Topics." Fisher said, "In EHS, we’re either growing or stagnating. Let’s harness AI, elevate our storytelling, and continue driving positive change. Session recap is below: 1. AI in EHS: EHS professionals spend approximately 40% of their time analyzing over 20,000 data points. Leveraging AI can streamline this workload and can help prioritize resources, which enables faster insights and action. Understanding what AI can do and how to apply it in real-world EHS practice is crucial. 2. Top Tech Priorities: Focusing on AI, real-time data, leading indicators, balanced score card, and leveraging tech portfolios are key areas to watch. Better data connections mean better decision-making and safety outcomes. 3. EHS Marketing & Communications: While EHS teams excel in enhancing workplace safety, they often struggle to showcase their impact. With the rise of sustainability roles, it’s time to amplify EHS’s role in driving business value. Telling the story better can attract resources. 4. Sustainability & Social Metrics: Key challenges include managing social metrics and physical climate risks, like extreme weather events. As ESG topics become more central, understanding their impact on EHS is essential. 5. Operational Priorities: Improving contractor safety remains top of mind. With talent shortages, non-native speaking workers, and new dynamics in the contractor workforce, companies need to focus on engaging their teams and selecting strong contractor partners.

Happy Flashback Friday, everyone! Let's take a look back to 2008, when Kent Hatcher from Humantech Ergonomics (now VelocityEHS) awarded Genie Industries in Redmond, VA, the Find-It-Fix-It Award. Genie, known for building lifts and equipment for working at heights, won by solving a tough cable-pulling task. By adding a cable-cutting piece of equipment to the process, they eliminated the need for employees to pull cables with 40 lbs. of force, significantly reducing their MSD risk. #workplaceergonomics #employeehealthandsafety #ergonomics
