When it comes to #API design approaches, #GraphQL and #OpenAPI both enhance interoperability and security, but differ in their flexibility and complexity. ⚖️ Vendia Cofounder and Father of Serverless Tim Wagner weighs in on the pros and cons between the two approaches and how platforms like Vendia (https://vendia.fyi/3zxY24I) empower #developers to seamlessly leverage the strengths of both. 👇 #datagovernance #dataautomation #dataintegration
I appreciated Ken Stott's recent NewStack article on GraphQL vs. OpenAPI: Pros and Cons for Data Governance. It's an intriguing and complex topic (and one of deep interest to my company, Vendia) so I thought I'd add some thoughts. First, if you're doing *anything* to improve the ability of APIs to satisfy a growing, evolving, security conscious, data-rich set of a clients and data sources: Bravo! *Any* of these or similar technologies add some much-needed declarative semantics to the uninterpreted data payload of a REST API, making interconnections between different systems, different companies, different clouds, or any two or more different "anythings" much, much safer to use, easier to develop and test, and generally more comprehensible to humans and machines alike. Ken (and others -- I also like this tailcall series https://lnkd.in/gGVJKMbA) do a good job of explaining the basic differences between these two approaches. Both do a reasonable job of bringing structure to REST API payloads...the original idea behind Swagger, which morphed into OpenAPI (though honestly I loved the OG branding). Beyond here, they start to differ in their approach and advantages. While it's not quite accurate, thinking of this as the difference between "static" and "dynamic" typing is a roughly approximate way to understand the main differences. GraphQL is sort of halfway between OpenAPI and SQL: There is an essentially unbounded set of queries that can be asked, and neither the client nor the server commit in advance, allowing for independent evolution and even dynamic query construction. Now, GraphQL isn't SQL -- in particular, it doesn't really offer joins unless you're sneakily introducing them through the form of the data -- but it's intentionally dynamic. OpenAPI, as has been pointed out, is great when the set of queries is known and you really just want to document what the legal format of queries and responses look like, so that everyone has a clear picture of the data structures involved. This core difference then bleeds over into security, authiness, perf, and evolution. GraphQL can exhibit better performance by "pushing" selections and projections over the wire, so that extraneous info need not be sent back to the client. With OpenAPI you're stuck with the API request/response format as designed. Schema evolution is simpler in GraphQL for similar reasons. The flip side to this flexibility is that security and auth is trickier in a dynamic world: You need to pin them to the data model, instead of just the API, and while that's way more powerful...it's also way more complex. Just like JDBC/ODBC, most of the "hard part" of ACLs resides in row & column access controls, something GraphQL per se doesn't help with. Want help creating powerful GraphQL APIs without the hassle of writing them yourself or wish you could apply an OpenAPI schema to a GraphQL-based solution? Vendia has you covered :).
