  • VAI Webinar: Do You Do Maintenance by the Rules or by the Norms? Like many of us, pilots and maintenance technicians develop their own ways of doing things over time. The same goes for aviation companies with regard to operational procedures. Such habits and norms can be effective, but they can also go unquestioned, which can lead to trouble. The seemingly innocent mindset of “that’s the way we always do it” can cause harm when aviation rules and regulations aren’t regularly consulted. Mechanics/engineers who fail to regularly check the manual line for line when performing a repair risk missing a step or an important maintenance update. The same can be said for company procedures if they’re not regularly compared with aviation rules and regulations. If the regulations limit a worker to 12 hours, for example, pushing to 14 for the overtime pay because “others do it all the time here” is a clear violation of the rules. Mark Tyler, VP…

  • Join us today, Sep. 12, for a special, “Best of” edition of our VAI webinar series. We’ll revisit our Oct. 22, 2020, webinar, in which we heard from the pilots-in-command of two California Army National Guard helicopter crews that successfully rescued hundreds of people under extreme conditions during a devastating forest fire in the Sierra Nevada mountains. In this recording, they share insights into their training and mission assessment and the demanding flights that pushed the limits of both the CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters used during the operation.   The pilots recount experiencing nighttime flying conditions that were more treacherous than any they faced during their service in Afghanistan or Iraq. They discuss the adjustments the crews needed to make to accommodate the heavy loads of their helicopters in “hot and high” conditions, showcasing their exceptional skill and determination.   In recognition of their bravery, the seven members of the helicopter crews received the Distinguished Flying Cross from then–President Donald Trump. They were also honored with the 2021 Salute to Excellence Humanitarian Service Award from Helicopter Association International (now Vertical Aviation International).   While we won’t be able to take questions during this recorded session, the insights shared will be invaluable for anyone within the vertical aviation sector.   Featured speakers include CW5 Joseph Rosamond and CW5 Kipp Goding, both esteemed members of the California Army National Guard 40th Combat Aviation Brigade.   Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from their extraordinary experiences! Research has shown that pilots often fail to recognize and recover from #spatialdisorientation (SD), in part because of the confusing sensory signals the deadly phenomenon causes. In this month’s VAI Spotlight on Safety video, Tyson Phillips, cofounder of aviation training company AT Systems, explains SD and how pilots can train to avoid and overcome it. To learn how you can recognize and avoid spatial disorientation, read this month's accompanying article at https://lnkd.in/eRQeP23V.
