Every year, organizations across the country recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month. The suicide rate for Veterans is 1.5 times higher than that of the general population. Mental illness has strong links to suicide among Veterans. While alcohol and drug abuse accounts for higher suicide risk, other mental disorders are often associated with substance misuse and suicide. The more common mental disorders among Veterans are PTSD and depression. For example, exposure to trauma while in the service can lead to increased risk of both substance misuse and PTSD or depression. Veterans Community Project of St. Louis screens each Veteran served and connects Veterans who are at risk to resources that will give them the support they need. One small act can make a difference in the life of a Veteran or Service member in crisis. We are celebrating the success of Glen, one of our newest residents, as he accepts a job offer with the St. Louis Public Schools.  The same determination required to get to Veterans Community Project for the first time on his bike from where he lived 15 miles away, was needed to find a job, but his persistence paid off. His response to life’s challenges, positive outlook and unshakeable belief in himself is sure to encourage the students and everyone he meets. In just a few short weeks, he has taken steps toward his long term goals. #veterans #mission #service #community

Often, homeless Veterans with families do not seek assistance from traditional social service organizations because the housing options may be unsafe for children, they fear separation, or they believe they will lose custody of their children if they ask for help. Veterans Community Project provides housing and support to Veterans and their families. Single parents, husbands and wives, and dependent children can receive support at VCP and know they won’t have to be separated—something especially important for military families. And our Villages often serve as a family reunification space. American Legion Auxiliary hosted Girls State this week at Lindenwood University and as part of the program teaching the ALA’s mission of serving Veterans, military, and their families, Veterans Community Project was honored to be selected as the President’s Project. Thank you for generously donating food & Bombas socks to our Outreach Pantry & encouraging donations to furnish a tiny house. Today we remember June 19th, 1865 commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and recognize heroic efforts like those of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and soldiers like William Carney, the first African American Medal of Honor recipient. We honor their legacy as soldiers who gave their lives for freedom during the Civil War setting an example for all who continued the fight for freedom then and now. #juneteenth #veterans
