Vianovo partner Mike Shannon co-authored a new piece alongside Will Feltus for Campaigns & Elections. Just in time for the World Series, they unpack the politics of MLB fanbases and why baseball is a smart buy for presidential candidates. As the World Series is in full swing, Will Feltus and I have a new piece in Campaigns & Elections on the politics of baseball fans⚾. TLDR: 🚩The Reds are the reddest (index the highest GOP). The Atlanta Braves, with a following across the South, have one of the larger and more Republican fan bases. 🔵On the other hand, the Dodgers are the bluest blue…and the Yankees are blue, too. A left-field matchup in this year’s Fall Classic. 📺Despite the largely Dem fan bases of the Yankees and Dodgers, you’re likely seeing lots of ads from both parties if you’re watching this year’s WS. 🎯Political media buyers know that baseball fans are high turnout voters, and major sporting events offer one of the few opportunities for campaigns to reach attentive likely voters in real-time. 💸Cost of a :30 national spot is running more than $500k (a Dodgers sweep would cost Fox a lot of money!). Full piece is here: https://lnkd.in/gzgt6c4N Bubble chart based on analysis of 394,202 Nielsen-Scarborough interviews. ✅BONUS: Like politics, all baseball is local. Fans are much more attached to their local franchises than to MLB in general (you turn on the TV to watch your team.) This is different than the NFL, where the brand is the “shield” (you turn on the TV to find an NFL game) or the NBA, where the brand is the player (you turn on the TV to see LeBron or Steph play).
