As we reflect on last month’s Resilience Hub Summit, we are filled with gratitude, pride in our community, and renewed energy. During the summit, members of Resilience Hubs across Hawaiʻi Island came together to participate in trainings and peer-to peer-learning that demonstrates the growth of our collective resiliency. We heard from disaster management experts about best practice for protecting children during disasters, safeguarding our electrical grid during disasters, how to conduct a walkability study to inform emergency evacuation routes, and so much more. Mahalo nui loa to all who contributed to this gathering, with special shoutouts to: ✨ Kilauea Military Camp for hosting us ✨Hawaii Army National Guard for the MREs ✨Koʻolau Hubs and Harold K.L. A few weeks ago I was honored to be invited to attend and share on a panel at the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable National Forum on Rural Development alongside Larry Seltzer of The Conservation Fund, Megan Lawson of Headwaters Economics, David Lipsetz of Housing Assistance Council, and Sara Moffat of Bureau of Land Management. Our panel focused on the tension between the outdoor economy as a promising practice and the unintended impacts on the local/host community. Mahalo nui to Chris Perkins and his team for bringing together 70 incredible leaders from across the nation to share and learn from one another.
FIRST-EVER NATIONAL RECREATION LEADERSHIP FORUM ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT: A few weeks ago ORR brought together 70 national leaders in economic development, outdoor recreation, and conservation to identify shared priorities and core opportunities for rural communities looking to enhance their economies through outdoor recreation. The National Leadership Forum on Rural Development featured a keynote address from Baratunde Thurston, Emmy-nominated host, producer, writer, and public speaker, as well as high-profile discussions with Basil I. Gooden, Ph.D. Gooden, USDA Under Secretary for Rural Development, I Ling Matthews Thompson, CEO of the Foundation for America's Public Lands, Marc Berejka, Divisional Vice President at REI Co-op, Glenn Hughes, President at American Sportfishing Association, and many others to discuss the current state of rural America, key development opportunities to tap into, and lessons from effective communities from around the country to demonstrate how outdoor recreation and rural economies can thrive together. ORR thanks the Richard King Mellon Foundation for their support of this event as well the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship and the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation for their partnership and collaboration.

ʻAʻohe pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi. All knowledge is not taught in the same school. ʻŌlelo Noʻeau #203 💡 We have much to learn from each other, and especially those who may have different ideas and opinions. This ʻōlelo noʻeau reminds us that those who come from different experiences, ways of learning, and perspectives may also hold ʻike, and that we should not assume that we and those who think like us know everything to the exclusion of others. #AVibrantHawaii #HawaiiIsland #OleloNoeau #Reflection

“The most rewarding part of supporting the Kaukau 4 Keiki program is knowing that aside from helping our local farmers and businesses, we are making an impact in the lives of our local families by providing these healthy and sustainable products free of charge,” says Brandon Bartolome, President of Hilo Products. 💚 Mahalo nui to HILO PRODUCTS COMPANY LIMITED for being a member of the Vibrant Hawaiʻi Resilience Alliance, and for their kōkua in connecting local farmers and food producers with food insecure families during Kaukau 4 Keiki this summer. E lawe i ke aʻo a mālama, a e ʻoi mau ka naʻauao. He who takes his teachings and applies them increases his knowledge. ʻŌlelo Noʻeau #328 💡This ʻŌlelo Noʻeau reminds us that learning is reinforced by doing. Watching, listening, and learning is important, but there are some kinds of knowledge and wisdom that we can only gain by applying what we learn to our actions. By making our learning manifest in the world, we increase our knowledge, contribute to our community, and serve as an example and inspiration to others. #AVibrantHawaii #HawaiiIsland #OleloNoeau #Reflection

Mahalo Hawaiʻi Community Foundation for supporting, investing, and believing in Vibrant Hawaiʻi!✨ 💚
🎉We honor and congratulate the 2024 Ho‘okele Award recipients! The Ho‘okele Award pays tribute to leaders from the nonprofit sector—the guiding forces in our community who strive to make Hawai‘i a better place. Each award recipient receives a grant from the Kelvin Taketa Ho‘okele Leadership Award Fund to support their own personal renewal and professional development. A portion of this year’s award gifts are being generously supported by the Gerbode Foundation, a key partner that helped create the Ho‘okele Awards in 2002. Since 2002, $890,000 has been awarded to 89 nonprofit leaders statewide, the majority of whom remain in the nonprofit sector. Award recipients were selected based on community nominations and their ability to think strategically and get results, bring different groups of people together, inspire others, make a difference in Hawai‘i and enthusiastically share their knowledge. 👏🏽Please help us congratulate the following recipients, pictured from left to right: Janice Ikeda, Founding Executive Director, Vibrant Hawai‘i. Kelly Maluo-Pearson, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, Inc. Maude Cumming, Executive Director, Family Life Center Hawaii. Kūhiō Lewis, CEO, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). Learn more about the recipients at https://lnkd.in/dTShp-kq Photos are from the award celebration on Tuesday, September 10. #hookele #nonprofitleader #hawaiinonprofit #celebrate #hawaiicommunity
