We’ve learned a lot from our original model, and now we’re evolving to meet the deeper needs of refugee women in our community. Many women require more time and education before job skills training, and we’ve adjusted our program to provide that support. Our new model offers longer support, fewer barriers, and more flexible opportunities, leading to greater success. How the 2024 Election Impacts the Refugees We Serve ❤️💙 As the election approaches, immigration is a hot topic. But not all immigrants are the same. Refugees are here after fleeing war or persecution, and with the blessing of the State Department. They have legal work status and active in our communities, but refugees don’t have a voice like most of us. Because of a 5-year wait to become citizens, many refugees can’t yet vote. They are some of the most vulnerable members of our community but can’t vote for change. Advocacy for refugees is in the hands of voters like us. Over 50,000 refugees call Dallas home, with thousands in other cities across the U.S. As we head into this pivotal election, it’s essential to know who immigrants are so we don’t marginalize and disempower future citizens through sweeping generalizations. We've included a chart outlining the differences between immigration statuses. Policies resulting from the upcoming election could impact our refugee friends in profound ways. One of the best victories! ZarZar is an asylee who has been waiting for her Green Card for six years. She arrived in the United States after fleeing a military attack in Burma, and she was separated from her family during resettlement. The Green Card is a HUGE step toward citizenship, because she can apply in just five years, instead of having to apply for asylum every two years. We're so excited for ZarZar! Thanks to OnRamp DFW, Azamit, (pictured in the middle) no longer has to walk long distances or depend on friends for rides—she now has her own Prius! Her journey involved months of hard work, including budgeting classes, drivers ed, and securing insurance. One of the most touching moments was receiving a Bible in her native language. As a devout Christian, this was incredibly meaningful. As an added plus, OnRamp’s partnership with Christian Brothers Automotive will also cover her car maintenance for the first year. We’re so proud of her journey and the community that made this possible!
