🌍 Strengthening Newborn Care at Kigutu Hospital 👶🏾 At Village Health Works, we are committed to ensuring every newborn receives the best possible start in life. Since August 2023, we have been honored to partner with Dr. Anne White and Dr. Ellen Diego, US-trained neonatologists from the University of Minnesota, to build capacity for life-saving Essential Newborn Care (ENC). Through a recurring training program, our dedicated hospital staff—including midwives, maternity nurses, pediatric nurses, and general practitioners—are strengthening their skills in evidence-based newborn care. The training, grounded in World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, combines lecture-based and hands-on simulation sessions to standardize care at birth as we prepare for the launch of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Drs. Anne White & Ellen Diego spent the last three weeks in Kigutu and we can't wait to have them back! So far, over 72 healthcare professionals have been trained, and together we are identifying and addressing key gaps in best practices, equipment needs, and systemic barriers. Village Health Works (VHW) is an innovative and rapidly growing non-profit organization with headquarters in NYC and operations in Burundi, East Africa. Located at the source of the Nile River, Burundi is renowned as a land of both great beauty and extreme poverty. VHW was founded upon a strong belief that good health (i.e, of the mind, body and spirit) is a prerequisite for any society to be self-sufficient and peaceful. VHW’s community-driven approach is fundamentally important in all we do, and is the guiding principle that drives the success of our work. Our mission is to provide high quality and compassionate healthcare in a dignified environment, while addressing the social determinants of illness and disease. We deliver world class, locally-based, medical care, food security, gender empowerment, education, and economic development initiatives. In the past five years we have served the needs of over 90,000 patient encounters. Our well-established HIV, TB, Malnutrition, and Chronic Disease programs continue to grow successfully. The hope generated through increased health catalyzes ever more meaningful community engagement with VHW, and within society. Our organization is now expanding our health services by planned construction of a Women's Health Pavilion, Pediatrics Pavilion, and Isolation Ward. Through this holistic and dynamic implementation of our mission, VHW brings meaningful and lasting change to some of the world's most impoverished and vulnerable people.
