Good vibes. Good rides! Virtua colleagues recently participated in the Goals Start Now (GSN) Propel 100 Charity Bike Ride. Proceeds from this event supported our cancer patient support services and mobile health screening initiatives! A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the ride, and the amazing folks at GSN for supporting our oncology services.

Big news! We’ve successfully completed our first Transcatheter Arterialization of the Deep Veins (TADV) using the innovative LimFlow SA device. This advanced procedure is a game-changer for limb salvage, allowing us to restore blood flow and save limbs in patients facing severe vascular issues. A huge shoutout to our dedicated vascular and podiatry teams for launching this vital program, which will change so many lives in South Jersey.

We’re thrilled to announce that TeamBirth has officially expanded to Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, marking a milestone for Virtua Health as the very first multisite health system in New Jersey to embrace this innovative model of care. TeamBirth NJ is an evidence-based model that empowers patients to actively participate in decisions related to their care. During labor and delivery, patients and their support people huddle together with the entire care team to make informed decisions and voice their preferences. By enhancing communication and ensuring that every voice is heard, TeamBirth is not just transforming the way we deliver care — it’s improving maternal outcomes and creating a more compassionate experience for families. Join us as we celebrate this leap forward in patient-centered care!

In less than two years as the Nurse Director at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Dave Richardson has transformed his unit into a model of collaboration and excellence. From day one, Dave prioritized engaging his team—both seasoned and new nurses—to create a cohesive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. His unique leadership style combines sharp business acumen with a genuine passion for innovation, inspiring those around him to reach higher standards. Dave's most notable achievement has been dramatically reducing hospital-acquired C Diff cases. By actively collaborating with Infection Prevention and IT teams, he revamped workflows and documentation practices. The results? A stunning drop in cases from 10 in 2022 to just 1 in 2023—an achievement that was once thought impossible for a unit with traditionally high rates. For these reasons and many more, we're proud to present Dave with the WE Award for Inclusive Teamwork.

“The challenge of spine surgery is exciting, but seeing my patients thrive is what truly drives me.” Say hello to Dr. James Sanfilippo, spine surgeon at Virtua Orthopedics & Spine. For Dr. Sanfilippo, the thrill of spine surgery isn’t just about the challenge—it’s about transforming lives. In fact, Dr. Sanfilippo remembers one patient in particular, who went from being wheelchair-bound to walking out of the hospital on the same day his son was born. Every year since, this patient sends birthday cards to both Dr. Sanfilippo and his son, a beautiful reminder of the impact he makes. Which is fitting, considering "Beautiful Day" by U2 is his go-to song while performing surgery. Outside of the OR, you can find him hiking with his family, cheering at sports events, or enjoying a day at the beach.

September is NICU Awareness Month. So it only seems fitting that this week, we officially unveiled our reimagined NICU Wall of Hope at Virtua Voorhees Hospital. The bright new gallery wall features 28 then-and-now photo sets of former NICU babies who are now vibrant toddlers, kids, and teens. Each child overcame various medical challenges, some weighing as little as 1 lb. and many spent more than 100 days in the hospital before going home. Their remarkable stories will offer other families encouragement and a glimpse into a future filled with laughter, milestones, and cherished moments beyond the NICU. From all of us at Virtua, thank you to the families who participated in this special project – your stories will inspire NICU families for years to come!
