Jessica Long is the co-founder and president of Maad, francophone Africa’s fastest-growing B2B e-commerce player. Jessica and her team adopted Visible in December 2021 to send out investor updates for the first time after closing a pre-seed round. Since then, the team at Maad has continued to leverage Visible’s suite of fundraising tools — like data rooms and pitch decks. Maad successfully closed its seed round led by Ventures Platform. If you’re a founder, #fundraising for the first time, the entire process can feel daunting. Over the next couple of weeks, I’'ll share some of the fundraising frameworks I love. Hopefully it makes the process feel a little less daunting and saves you some time. 🎯Up first: Building a target investor list To make the best use of your precious time, you’ll want to spend time trying to get in front of, and talking to, the most relevant investors.I recommend adding 50-75+ relevant investors to your target list (template linked below in comments). How do you go about finding these investors? First you need to figure out the criteria you’re looking for in a potential investor. You’ll want to prioritize investors who actively invest in your stage and industry. Some of my favorite places to identify investors are: 🤝 Visible.vc's Investor Connect (free) 🤝 NFX's Signal tool (free) 🤝 Crunchbase database ($49.99/month) There are also a ton of listicles that feature the top, or most active, investors across different sectors and industries, so plan to do a little searching online. If you have existing investors, founder friends, or advisors, ask them to identify 1-2 investors they think you should speak with and add them to your target-list. As you’re adding investors to your target-list, you’ll also want to start gathering initial research about the fund and adding it to your list: 💰 Check-size 🚀 If they lead rounds, or tend to follow-on ✍ Thesis and areas of expertise/interest 📊 Ownership targets If you can’t find this information, don’t stress. As part of every introductory call you have with an investor, you’ll do some discovery to uncover the answer to the questions you were unable to find during your own research. Within the target investor template, you’ll notice a column for Warm Connection/Intro-Path. As you identify investors, start by searching them on LinkedIn. Do you have any first-degree connections? Make note of those folks in your spreadsheet. If you have existing angels, advisors - send them your target investor to review and identify where they can make introductions. If you have access to LinkedIn Sales Navigator you can create a shareable list that makes it seamless for folks to compare LinkedIn connections with your list. If you aren’t already paying for SalesNav, don’t worry. Sending the spreadsheet is fine. There will likely be a number of investors on your list that you don’t have warm connections or intro-paths. That’s okay - cold outreach will enable us to get in front of these folks too. Now - you've got a target investor list! Next-up I'll share how to send intro requests and cold emails. If I missed something, let me know in the comments and if you found this post helpful, give it a 👍 or a share (it will help more people see the post).

As OpenView put in their 2023 SaaS Benchmarks Report, “The North Star metric has become ARR per FTE, which reflects the productivity of your team and whether adding headcount helped make a stronger business. This is a metric you can’t hide from. There’s no complicated math or financial engineering to do.”   As the data above shows (from Kyle Poyar of OpenView), SaaS companies have consistently become more productive. As companies leverage AI for internal operations, we should expect to see productivity and ARR/FTE increase—something High Alpha will investigate in their 2024 SaaS Benchmarks Report. See how your company’s ARR per FTE and other SaaS metrics stack up to your peers by taking the 2024 High Alpha SaaS Benchmarks Survey here: https://lnkd.in/g8nXiTau

At Visible, we often compare a venture fundraise to a traditional B2B sales and marketing funnel. - At the top of the funnel, you are adding qualified potential investors (via cold and warm outreach) - In the middle of the funnel, you nurture potential investors with meetings, emails, pitch decks, etc. - At the bottom of the funnel, you are hopefully closing new investors and turning them into your biggest champions with regular communication. Like a sales process, a good fundraise starts by finding the right investors for the top of your funnel. As an investor, collecting the data most useful to your firm can feel like a balancing act, as you need enough data for your LPs and portfolio insights. However, great investors want to respect the founder's bandwidth and being overly burdensome. As Britni put it, "We interact with founders daily, and it is widely understood that they have demanding schedules. Typically, founders prioritize their capital management and customer relations, relegating investor updates to a lower priority. Visible addresses this challenge by simplifying the process for founders to share their company metrics. As a program coordinator, I can establish recurring requests, eliminating the need for frequent data request emails."
