Did you know that 70% of school-age children who are blind have NEVER participated in any sport or physical activity? Make an IMPACT in the lives of youth with vision loss! Vision Forward is looking for reliable, energetic, and committed volunteers ready to assist as camp counselors and help youth by guiding them through various physical activities. Activities include but not limited to: beep baseball, goalball, kayaking, gardening, dancing, etc. The Rainbow Day Camp is a 4-day camp created specifically for students ages 5–18 with vision loss. Adults are welcome to volunteer in shifts or all day and are required to commit to multiple shifts/days to provide the best experience for the youth. Individuals that have experience as a camp counselor or working with children and youth preferred. This is a great opportunity for OT, PT, special education students or those pursuing similar degrees. Bus transportation will be provided daily from Vision Forward to the JCC Camp for those that will be at camp all day. Volunteers are responsible for completing a mandatory training at Vision Forward before camp (date TBD). A team of researchers from MIT and University College London (UCL) created a software system called Umwelt (which means “environment” in German) that can enable blind and low-vision users to build customized, multimodal data representations without needing an initial visual chart.
