The principle of "RENDERING MORE AND BETTER SERVICE THAN WHAT YOU ARE PAID FOR". Carol Downes was initially employed in the service of W.C Durant, the automobile manufacturer in a minor position. He went on to become his right-hand man and the president of one of his automobile-distributing companies! How did he achieve this? He got promoted to this enviable position through the application of the "Law of Increasing Returns" by rendering more and better service for that for which he was paid. First, Carol Downes noticed that Mr Durant stayed in the office, long after all the other staff might have gone home. He made it his business to remain in the office too. He not only stayed in the office but gave Mr Durant any assistance that he might need. Often Mr Durant would look for someone to bring him a file, or render him some trivial service. Of course, he always found Carol Downes there to serve him. He then got into the "habit of calling on Carol Downes". Why? This is because Carol Downes made it his business to be where he would be seen. Was he told to do so? No. He deliberately placed himself in Mr Durant's way to render service that would place the law of increasing back on him. Was he paid to do so? Yes! He was paid by the opportunity it offered him to bring himself to the attention of the man who had it within his power to promote him. The observance of this principle brings about three rewards: 1. It brings about the reward of a greater material gain than that enjoyed by those not practicing it.  2. It brings about happiness and satisfaction which comes only to those who render such service.  3. It gives recognition to those who practice it. The principle is applicable in all spheres of life because it is a law of nature. It is applicable in the tiling of the soil, just as it is in paid employment and business. When you apply this principle with full faith, it will mark one of the most important turning points in your career.
