Our day by the Monterey Bay! 🏖 🚗 VistAbility's Asian Family Resource Center (AFRC) hosted its first ever day trip for the Vietnamese group! The group of 30 participants and volunteers departed Concord at 7am, making a pit stop for coffee and breakfast at Buon Me Cafe in San Jose's Little Saigon before arriving at Carmel-by-the-Sea's iconic 17 Mile Drive. 📷 Though the weather was overcast with a thick fog, this did not dampen the spirits of the group. Everyone snapped and posed for photos, some climbed up rocks to get a better view of the coastline. For lunch, the group ate banh mi at Bird Rock lookout and watched the ground squirrel's run around. 🎤 Next, the group headed over to Pebble Beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea. A few participants walked down the sandy beach to get close to the water's edge (the fog had finally burned off!) while others found a shady spot underneath some towering Cypress trees to relax and bust out the karaoke machine. The group danced, sang, and laughed together-- even capturing the attention of some Vietnamese-fluent bystanders who joined in on the fun! 🍜 After a long day, the trip wrapped up with dinner at Pho 90 degrees back in Little Saigon. The day was a success! Not only did their first day trip go on without a hitch, it also accomplished one of the main purposes of AFRC-- to foster a socially inclusive space for people to share in their cultural identity and support one another. ✈ What's next? The group is hoping that with the success of their Monterey trip, they can potentially plan more ambitious trips to further locations-- even mentioning Los Angeles and Canada! 🤔 ❓ What is AFRC? Asian Family Resource Center (AFRC) supports people with developmental disabilities and mental health needs in living lives of their choosing within their communities as independently as possible. Staff are able to communicate to both the person receiving services and family members in their primary language: Cantonese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Mien. Accessing community resources is an integral part of the services provided. #nonprofit #eastbay #montereybay #daytripping #roadtrip #disabilityinclusion #mentalhealthsupport
