Gen Z in the Workplace: A Generational Shift or a Problem? 🚨 A new report reveals that 6 in 10 employers have already let go of newly hired Gen Z grads this year, highlighting growing tensions between employer expectations and Gen Z’s work approach. In fact, 1 in 6 employers are now hesitant to hire Gen Z again, and 1 in 7 are considering avoiding them entirely next year. Many employers feel that Gen Z can be difficult to work with and often lack workplace professionalism. What’s fueling this clash? 💥 Gen Z's approach to work: Raised to value authenticity in every part of life, Gen Z views the workplace as no exception. To them, expressing their true selves at work isn’t entitlement—it’s a right. 💥 Traditional views: Older generations often see work as a place to deliver results in exchange for a paycheck—not a venue for self-expression. They value performance and contribution over individuality. This clash of expectations is causing problems, with some arguing Gen Z isn’t contributing enough to justify their demands. Meanwhile, others question why work can’t be more fulfilling. #news #genz #workplace #culture

Is the job market for new graduates looking grim? 👀🚨 UC Berkeley Professor James O'Brien pointed out that even top-performing students are finding it difficult to secure jobs after graduating, a sharp change from previous years. He mentioned that even those with perfect 4.0 GPAs are struggling to get job offers. This reflects a wider issue, with tech sector hiring down and over 130,000 workers laid off this year, bringing the hiring rate to its lowest in ten years. The situation with underemployment is just as alarming: 40% of recent graduates reported being in jobs they're overqualified for, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Many recent grads are left uncertain about their future steps. #news #techjobs

A New AI Startup on the Block 🚀 Berkeley PhD grads Sarah Wooders and Charles Packer just launched Letta, an AI startup with a mission to solve one of AI’s biggest challenges – memory. Their tech is set to revolutionize how AI models remember things—whether it’s users, conversations, or preferences. Born out of Berkeley's Sky Computing Lab and the popular MemGPT open-source project, Letta is already backed by top industry giants like Google’s Jeff Dean, Hugging Face’s Clem Delangue 🤗, Runway’s Cristóbal Valenzuela, and Anyscale’s Robert Nishihara. 💰They’ve hit a $70M post-money valuation. Most AI models struggle with retaining long-term memory, which poses a significant challenge for apps that rely on continuous learning from users, like those in healthcare or customer service. Letta’s technology could pave the way for a new generation of personalized and intelligent AI-driven applications. #news #tech #AI #letta #Berkeley

Telegram’s Major Policy Shift 🚨 Telegram has announced it will now share user IP addresses and phone numbers with authorities upon valid legal requests. CEO Pavel Durov stated that this change aims to deter criminal activity on a platform used by nearly a billion users. This policy shift comes after Durov's recent detention in France over allegations of facilitating criminal behavior. Critics argue that Telegram has become a haven for misinformation and illicit content, allowing groups of up to 200,000 members—far exceeding WhatsApp’s 1,000-member cap. Recently, Ukraine has banned the app on state-issued devices to reduce potential threats from Russia. Additionally, Telegram faced criticism for hosting far-right channels linked to violence in English cities. Many are questioning whether Telegram will comply with oppressive regimes and has raised concerns about the future of free speech online. While the platform claims to enhance moderation through AI, experts warn that simply obscuring illegal content may not meet legal obligations under European laws. #news #tech #privacy #cybersecurity

Is China the Next Global Leader? 🇨🇳 A new report from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) says it’s time to drop the old narrative that “China can’t innovate”. They described China as a "fire-breathing dragon on government-provided steroids" and said its firms "will likely equal or surpass Western firms within a decade or so." 💡While the U.S. remains a powerhouse, China is rapidly advancing in key industries like AI, nuclear power, electric vehicles, and more. 🏭 China is heavily investing in domestic production, with companies like Huawei and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp leading the charge. 🚀China is making huge strides in telecom, drones, and solar panels, offering lower-priced alternatives to Western products. China still lags behind in semiconductors. 🤑 The government is also supporting these efforts with subsidies, including a recent $47.5B fund aimed at increasing local chip production. 📊 China and the U.S. are nearly equal in R&D spending, but China now leads in academic journal publications and highly cited researchers. To help the U.S. maintain its lead in technology, the ITIF suggested tripling the tax credit for R&D and creating a national industrial development bank. #news #China #US #tech

Last week, I had the chance to hit the stage at the Fintech is Femme Creator Summit for a panel called OWNERSHIP VS ALGORITHMS: FINDING YOUR CREATOR PLATFORM FIT A few takeaways: 1. First off, you don’t need to be on every single platform just because it exists. Find what works for YOU. If you have a knack for writing, go deep on places like LinkedIn, Twitter, or Volv. If you’re all about video, focus on TikTok or YouTube. Play to your strengths, don’t try to do everything 2. Writers are crucial to culture—let’s not forget that. Instead of letting AI replace the art of writing, let’s use it to handle the backend ops, like distribution. That way, creativity stays at the center, and AI does what it’s good at: making things more efficient 3. Lastly, social media algo's aren’t exactly doing writers any favors. So many creators are putting in serious time making quality content, but it’s not reaching the right eyes. Platforms like Volv are stepping in to help those of us who don’t want to be in front of a camera but want to get our work discovered and distributed more effectively Thanks to Nicole Casperson, Elana Zak, Preeya Goenka 🐝, and Caitlyn Kumi for the conversation. Shoutout to the other speakers at the event Priyanka Vazirani, Ume Habiba, Keta Bagashvili, Alex Chester-Iwata, Anam Lakhani, Eve Halimi, Angella G.; Brett Dashevsky; Caroline Tanis, CDFA®MBA; Marion Siboni; Supreet Kaur; Thamina Stoll, Kim Rosenblum, Katie Perry, Kerry Reynolds, Anton Briones It's been a pleasure #content #writing #socialmedia #contentcreation #ai

New Insights on Parental Leave 📝 Parentaly, led by Allison Whalen, recently surveyed over 2,750 women about their experiences with parental leave. The findings highlight key challenges faced by women in the workplace when returning from leave. 🚨 Key Stats: 📌 64% of women surveyed expressed concerns about how parental leave could impact their career progression, particularly women with fully paid, longer leaves and those earning over $100K or holding managerial roles. 📌 45% reported a negative impact on career growth, with those on 6-month leaves being 38% less likely to get a raise and half as likely to get promoted within 18 months of returning. 📌For women earning less than $50K, only 33% reported concerns about career progression. 📌Among one-third of women left their jobs within 18 months after returning to work, with 60% moving to a new role and 4% of women left the workforce. 📌Even at companies offering generous leave policies, without proper planning and support, many women feel their career takes a hit. 📊 Gender Disparity: In a parallel survey of 300 men, 38% were concerned about career progression, 20% felt leave negatively impacted their careers, and 66% worried about perceptions of taking "too much" leave. 🗯 These findings show that even with generous policies, without the right support, both women and men feel the impact. #news #ParentalLeave #policies #WorkplaceCulture #DiversityandInclusion

The Intersection of Big Oil and Academia: How Much Influence is Too Much? 🤔 🚨A WIREs Climate Change study has revealed how major oil and gas companies—like bp—are entrenching themselves within academic institutions, potentially swaying the future of climate research and policy. 📚 The study reveals multiple instances where these corporations have gained influence across universities in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia—through funding research, sponsoring scholarships, shaping curricula, and even securing seats on university advisory boards. 🔎 The issue? This level of access allows these corporations to shape the narrative around climate solutions, potentially prolonging the role of oil and gas in the energy equation. Instead of prioritizing a full shift to renewable energy. In other words, these corporations may be greenwashing their image while slowing down real progress. 💬 What are your thoughts on the role of corporate influence in academia and its impact on the fight against climate change? Comment below 👇 #news #climatechange #bigoil #highereducation #sustainability #renewableenergy
