Advancing Vertical Flight Since 1943
About us
The Vertical Flight Society — founded in 1943 as the American Helicopter Society, Inc. — is the world's only international technical society for engineers, scientists and others working to advance vertical flight technology. We bring together industry, academia and government to tackle the toughest challenges in vertical flight. Our members share a legacy of knowledge and accomplishment that has been driving innovation for 75 years! Our highly acclaimed magazine, Vertiflite, brings our members in-depth insight into the latest technology developments. Our peer-reviewed technical publication, The Journal of the AHS, is the world’s only vertical flight technical journal. Membership also provides opportunities to exchange ideas, access to Members Only features on our website, discounts for our products and the opportunity to be recognized as part of our prestigious awards programs. I had the pleasure of joining Emile Gantous from Dassault Systems and Charlie Svoboda, VFS Midwest region Vice President for a dinner meeting to discuss a relaunch of the Dayton Chapter. Today, the region is experiencing impressive growth in the aviation and VTOL sectors. The FlyOhio initiative, National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence (NAAMCE), U.S. Air Force’s Agility Prime and Joby's planned large-scale manufacturing facility to name a few. Even traditional suppliers such as Hartzell Propeller, Inc. in Piqua, Ohio are now producing blades for various AAM aircraft. The chapter relaunch meeting kicked off with a presentation from Penn State VFS Student Chapter President and VLRCOE student Isabella Mawry, outlining her research in Individual Blade Pitch Controls (IBC) for Rotor and Fuselage Vibration Reduction of Coaxial Rotor Vehicle with a Pusher Propeller. Especially for those reading this in the Dayton Region, delegates have been selected to organize the next Chapter meeting, where Officer positions and descriptions will be laid out and candidates identified for elections to occur sometime in December 2024. Stay tuned for more information

A honor to have the Executive Director of the Vertical Flight Society, Angelo Collins, visit our lab and fly our simulators as part of his induction to the University of Maryland - A. James Clark School of Engineering Early Career Distinguished Alumni Society. He did a great job in flying an unaugmented H-60 with the aid of haptic feedback!
