Logistics isn’t considered magic—but maybe it should be. What Disney’s enchanted kingdoms and Amazon’s cutting-edge delivery systems teach us about modern supply chains might surprise you. At Disney’s Magic Kingdom, more than 50,000 guests flow seamlessly through a hub-and-spoke system. Each land—Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and more—radiates from Cinderella’s Castle like spokes on a wheel. Every step, from rides to restaurants, is optimized to minimize congestion, reduce wait times, and maximize joy. The magic isn’t just in the details—it’s in the hub-and-spoke network that makes the guest experience effortless. Amazon, too, relies on this concept in its logistics network. With over 100 fulfillment centers as hubs, supported by sortation centers and delivery stations as spokes, Amazon orchestrates a logistics symphony that ensures fast, reliable delivery and satisfied customers. Here’s the opportunity for retailers: You don’t need a castle or 124 million square feet of warehouse space to compete. Tech-enabled third-party cross-dock providers are revolutionizing logistics, helping retailers move goods efficiently, cut costs, and deliver faster—all without the infrastructure-heavy burden. By leveraging real-time scan events and advanced technology at every touchpoint, retailers gain full visibility across the supply chain. For Fortune 500 transportation leaders, the message is clear: The hub-and-spoke model isn’t just relevant—it’s evolving with technology and innovation. Retailers who embrace modern, tech-powered solutions can operate with the same agility and precision as giants like Amazon and Disney. Logistics is evolving. To stay ahead, it’s time to reimagine your strategy. Embrace agility, efficiency, and tech-enabled innovation to transform operations and elevate the customer experience.

Filling up trucks increases efficiency, plain and simple. Peter has been doing great work making this possible at Pod Foods. Here's a ranking of utilization from most to least efficient: 1) Full truckload to one destination 2) Full truckload to multiple destinations in the same region 3) Smaller truck to multiple destinations in the same region 4) Full truckload to multiple destinations in multiple regions 5) Smaller truck to multiple destinations in multiple regions The challenge with 4 and 5 is that trucks lose efficiency as they make more stops, with increasing unused space. A perfect network—where trucks pick up and deliver, refilling as they go—would solve this, but it’s unrealistic without full control over all facilities. Instead, utilizing cross-docks and terminals to drop off, pick up, and keep trucks full is key. That’s why LTL networks exist, but most providers lack control systems, leading to delays, lost freight, and inefficiencies. The few that can handle it well end up charging exorbitant amounts. At WARP we’re working to offer a cost-effective solution, helping shippers save money across distances while maintaining visibility and high-quality service. Thanks Peter for helping us on this journey!

    Pod Foods: We Deliver Innovation

Part 4 of How to fix the broken CPG Supply Chain Last week, we talked about how emerging CPG brands can collaborate together to take control of their inbound freight. If brands can stop selling FOB and stop paying inside income to their distributors, they can reduce retailers' landed cost. This makes room for brands and retailers to make more margin actually selling the product. Below is a generic example of how FTL routes are typically priced. There is a base cost for the route which is calculated by total mileage. This covers the first few (often 4) stops on the route. Then for each additional stop on that route, the total cost only increases by $30-$50 per stop. This dramatically reduces the cost per drop for everyone on that route. One way to optimize your freight is to just have huge scale. If you can ship 14 or more pallets per inbound, you are able to control your own destiny. Most emerging brands don't have that luxury. But what if you just partnered with 10 other emerging brands on the same route into your destination? Let's say some of the brands need to go to Gilroy, CA for "Distributor X", and others need to go to Stockton, CA for "Distributor Y" If you work together you can route your product onto the same FTL and in time pay 50% less than you would otherwise. We're willing to help with this, even if your inbounds aren't going to our warehouses. We believe in business karma, and by doing this more business will come our way eventually.
