Washington Law Review is excited to announce our class of 2026 editorial staff!

In his Comment, Max Del Real examines the evolution of internet experiences from static pages in the mid-1990s to today’s dynamic, personalized interactions. Under section 230, courts initially granted platforms immunity for algorithmic recommendations, but recent scrutiny suggests this may be excessive. The Supreme Court’s decision in Gonzalez v. Google left the issue unresolved. This Comment explores section 230’s current application to recommendation algorithms and potential strategies for limiting this immunity. Washington Law Review hosted its annual Alumni Banquet last week, lead by our Chair of Alumni Relations Benjamin MacLean (Photo 2). The event celebrated the journal’s alumni, the publication of Volumes 98 and 99, and this year’s editorial staff (3). The evening commenced with a reflection by Editor-in-Chief Matthew Burgess (4), who spoke about the publication’s accomplishments. During his tenure, the journal published over 1,000 pages and 7,000 footnotes across four books, a testament to the dedication and hard work of the editorial staff. Washington Court of Appeals Judge Rebecca Glasgow (5) delivered a keynote speech remembering her time as an executive editor of WLR. She discussed the reach of the legal scholarship that WLR publishes and its importance to Washington Courts. The Paul P. Ashley Award was bestowed upon sixteen law review members (6). This award supports students pursuing careers in public interest law. Professor Karen Boxx presented Anna Ferron (7) with the Vivian Carkeek Award for her comment, “Taking the Long Road: The Excessive Fines Clause as a Tool for Protecting Washington’s Unsheltered Population.” The Richard O. Kummert Outstanding Contribution Award was presented to Professor Mireille Butler (8) for her dedication to teaching first-year law students critical legal analysis, research, and writing skills and for her unwavering support of WLR's staff. We thank all our alumni, faculty, friends, and editorial staff members. Your support and contributions are invaluable.
