Updates

  • At The Washington Market School, we place tremendous value on learning– for our children and for our adults. Last week, a group of faculty and members of our leadership team, including Head of School Carrie Kries, gathered to co-create a new section of our Peer to Peer Guide. We created the original version of this resource last summer in a similar, co-creative manner, and it served throughout the school year as a tool to ensure that every member of our faculty and staff had a shared understanding of our truly unique school. Thank you Finalsite and Xavier High School for hosting WMS yesterday! Members of our team shared how Finalsite has not only helped us redesign our website, but has also given us to chance to connect with our community in deeper and more meaningful ways.

A number of people within Finalsite's Community came together this past week to share and learn from each other at the Boston and NYC area admissions and marketing workshops. Grateful for all attendees who were excellent participants spreading their knowledge with each other. Thankful for Xavier High School and St. Mark's School for hosting the workshops. Those schools have incredible learning spaces & their cafeterias provided delicious fuel for our brains. Thank you very much to the spotlight presenters at the NYC workshop: The Washington Market School Carrie Kries, Genna Scarano, Brooke Lowe, Emma Rothstein. And thank you very much to the spotlight presenters at the Boston Workshop: St. Mark's School Mallory Munro and Laura Host The teams at both those schools are effectively innovating to build and engage their community through their digital presence and spreading the values & mission of their school. Also many thanks to these individuals for helping with the events: Shawna Gallagher Vega, APR, Luciano Lovallo, David Orlando, Astrea Slezak, Caleb Cochran, Katie McLean, Bob Rojee, Ryan Nolan, Rob DiMartino, Micah Judd, Avery Hoglund, Christina Kelley and Jana Hoglund

  • The Washington Market School is lucky to have a leader like Carrie Kries. Last week, Carrie attended the Mental Health of Children and Young People Conference at the United Nations. She spoke in front of other leaders from around the world as they engaged in conversation and tried to answer the question "how can we do better?" #mentalhealthofchildren #leadership #WMS

I had an incredible experience this week! I addressed the Permanent Missions of Canada, Indonesia, Kuwait, Mexico, Qatar, and Romania, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) at the United Nations. Everyone present was focused on the role we all play in addressing the mental health of children and young people- as individuals and as organizations nationally and globally. Truly inspiring to be amongst leaders who dedicate themselves and their resources to the wellbeing of our children around the world. #mentalhealthofchildren #teachersmatter #leadingwithheart #leadingwithdignity The Washington Market School

  • The culture of adult learning at The Washington Market School is truly special. Our teachers not only have a passion for teaching young learners but for collaborating and teaching one another. Hudson Street Site Director, Marielle Lopez, so beautifully demonstrated this during a site meeting where we discussed how to use Montessori materials to teach language lessons. After Marielle demonstrated the use of Sandpaper Letters and the Moveable Alphabet, teachers excitedly offered to shared the skillful ways in which they use these time-tested materials with their children. We collectively learned new, creative games such as ‘knock knock’ and hide and seek with the Sandpaper Letters.

  • In a Montessori classroom, birthdays are celebrated by honoring each year of a child’s life through the “Walk Around the Sun.” This tradition not only honors a particular child on their birthday, but also encourages children to understand how the months in a year relate to the four different seasons. The Walk Around the Sun also promotes respect for each child in a beautiful and meaningful way. • The Washington Market School community is delighted to announce that we have welcomed two new staff members this summer: Marielle Lopez, Hudson Street Site Director and Pamela Kenny, Director of Enrollment. Both Marielle and Pamela joined our administrative team with a combined 40 years of experience in early childhood education, as well as deep knowledge of the New York City independent school sphere. Through a thoughtful and extensive search process to fill these roles, we, as a community, feel grateful to have found such skilled and dedicated professionals to join WMS. Marielle Lopez brings over 20 years of experience in early childhood education and has an extensive background in Montessori education. Having previously worked at Metropolitan Montessori in multiple capacities, beginning as a teacher and eventually becoming the Director of Enrollment, her skill set will be such an asset to our children’s growth, teachers’ professional development and parents’ peace of mind at our Hudson Street site. Director of Enrollment, Pamela Kenny, has spent the last decade working as an administrative professional at two highly regarded independent schools in New York City, and prior to that served as the preschool director in a Reggio-inspired school in Connecticut. With Over 20 years of experience in early childhood education, WMS is thrilled to welcome her to our community. Pamela will be one of the first to greet our families as they explore school options for their very young children who are just at the beginning of their educational journey. Just as importantly, Pamela will use her extensive knowledge of the NYC ongoing schools to partner with our families whose children are growing “too big for their cubbies at WMS” and help them to identify their just-right next school. In just a few short weeks, all of our WMS families will meet and begin to get to know these two fine educators and we couldn’t be more excited!
