  • “The right to a jury trial is a fundamental constitutional right, essential to our system of justice and our democracy. This new video will help prospective jurors understand the importance of jury service as a civic responsibility, and show them how our system of justice works." -King County Superior Court Judge Michael Scott The first new Juror Orientation Video for Washington Courts since 2005 has been produced by the Washington Pattern Jury Instructions Committee. The 21-minute video features an updated script, added definitions, professionally produced graphics and jury scenes narrated by a guide who explains jury selection steps, courtroom procedures, and provides examples of how unconscious bias works. The much-anticipated update was driven by an inspired collaboration of front-line professionals and a subcommittee of trial practice experts to create an informative tool for jurors about courtroom best practices, and clear directions for fulfilling one's civic duty. • What kind of help do survivors of gender-based violence need from community services and legal providers? What financial resources can be used to help pay for this help? How can access to assistance be standardized and expanded? These questions were asked by state lawmakers, and a work group of the Washington Supreme Court Gender and Justice Commission (GJC) answered. The GJC this week submitted a report to the Legislature with the answers and recommendations they developed over a year of work. Additionally, the GJC developed a database of available services in Washington state, searchable by type of service needed, by county and by tribal nation. • Washington's first Blake Drug Possession Relief Day, where those with Blake-related simple drug possession convictions can apply for financial and record-clearing relief, is set for October 4, 2024 at the Snohomish County Courthouse. A collaboration of judicial organizations, local courts, public defenders, prosecutors, judges, impacted individuals, advocacy groups and support agencies will be available from 1-4 p.m. to help attendees determine if their convictions qualify for relief under the "State v. Blake" Washington Supreme Court ruling. If someone has qualifying convictions, legal aid groups will manage the vacate and refund process on their behalf. In 2021, the Washington Supreme Court found Washington statutes criminalizing drug possession were unconstitutional because they did not require intent or knowledge of possession – a due process violation of both state and federal constitutions. As a result of this decision, known as "State v. Blake," any related convictions can be vacated and any court fines or fees paid qualify for financial reimbursement. • “The Mockingbird Summit gives our commissioners a unique chance to support creative ideas and solutions that come directly from the voices of experience, the youth themselves. Building strong advocacy skills in our young people benefits our communities for years to come.” -Washington State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Madsen Recently, young people who have experienced foster care or homelessness in Washington State gathered for the 2024 Mockingbird Youth Leadership Summit. The Summit brings these young advocates together to learn from each other, talk about the major problems faced by youth in or transitioning from foster care or who find themselves homeless, and develop ideas for programs or laws to help these struggling populations. On day two of the Summit, regional chapters of youth presented their ideas to the Washington State Supreme Court Commission on Children in Foster Care — co-chaired by Washington Supreme Court Justice Barbara Madsen — and the Office of Homeless Youth Prevention and Protections Programs Advisory Committee. This important annual gathering provides insight and guidance from youth to organizations and leaders trying to develop solutions. The Administrative Office of the Courts Family and Youth Justice Programs is a sponsor. We appreciate the courage and thoughtfulness of the young people who joined this event to help make things better. “I love and would always stand with Jim Theofelis, Mockingbird Society founder, and alongside one of the pillars of Washington State Office of Public Defense, Amelia Watson. This event is one of the most inspirational gatherings I have had the honor experiencing. Truly hearing the lived expertise of living through the systems of this state from the experts themselves is the best means to gauge the impacts and traumas of our generations and where we need to make changes moving forward. This event is such a gift to us as a Supreme Court Commission and we will be having conversations and plans around what we can do next.” -Supreme Court Commission member Tonia McClanahan To learn more about the Mockingbird Society, visit their web page at https://lnkd.in/g6hwjVr4.
