About us

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Waterfront Botanical Gardens is a new botanical garden under construction atop the former Ohio Street Dump near the intersection of Frankfort Avenue and River Road in Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood. Phase 2 of the Master Plan is being built now on the 23-acre site. The Graeser Family Education Center and Mary Lee Duthie Garden opened in October 2019. The Helen Harrigan Garden and Beargrass Creek Pathway were added in 2020. In mid-2021, the 6,000-square-foot Ellen T. Leslie Botanical Classrooms are slated to open. While demonstrating the role of plants in the health of both the social community and the physical environment, WBG offers ongoing educational opportunities for both youth and adults as well as seasonal events. Our mission: To cultivate urban botanical gardens that educate, inspire, and enhance appreciation of the relationship between plant life and a healthy environment.
