Calling all mobility and transit experts! Watertown released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a Study for Improving City-Supported Mobility at www.watertown-ma.gov/bids. We seek a consultant to study and recommend the best ways to connect people where they want to go. Watertown seeks for our local mobility and transit network to be the best sum of its parts. As part of our planning for alternatives for residents & commuters from driving alone and in their cars, this study will guide our policies and actions into a more inclusive & equitable system. Public transit, cycling, walking, and new ways of getting around are all in the mix. A successful plan will outline an achievable path forward and address unmet mobility needs in a sustainable way. This Study is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and the City of Watertown. Proposals are due November 21, 2024. Work is intended to start in January 2025. For details on the scope, selection process, and more, the RFP can be requested at www.watertown-ma.gov/bids

Watertown was recently announced as a recipient of a competitive grant, receiving $806,192 from the US Department of Transportation as part of the Safe Streets for All program (one of the main grants within the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law). Watertown is the 3rd-highest (in terms of project cost) community in Massachusetts out of just 12 Bay State awardees that received a grant in the current round of funding. We are also receiving a local match from Massachusetts Department of Transportation and have the support of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. The City will conduct three main activities – a Safe System Approach educational campaign, a Citywide speed limit study, and data-driven demonstration activities. The educational campaign will be geared toward all City residents and roadway users, and centers on reducing risks, aiming to make crashes and mistakes less severe (as part of the Vision Zero philosophy). The demonstration activities will include the deployment of “quick-build” traffic calming, pedestrian safety, and bicycle safety treatments, including near Perkins School (to address safety considerations for blind & visually impaired pedestrians), along a major east-west spine. This corridor runs the full length of North Beacon Street and Watertown Street through Watertown Square. These activities will be advanced in consultation with City residents.

The City of Watertown hosted an employee lunch this afternoon, in Saltonstall Park next door to City Hall, which included staff from all departments including Raider, the Community Resource Dog (in training) at the Police Department. Staff members had the opportunity to talk with staff members they know and introducing themselves to those they did not know. All eyes were on Raider as she ate her first ice cream because she's so adorable. Vee, the City's goose mitigation dog, was too shy to attend today.
