“Maybe this one moment, with this one person, is the very reason we’re here on Earth at this time” Jean Watson
About us
We're here for nurses. Watson Caring Science Institute is an international non-profit 501C(3) organization that advances the unitary philosophies, theories and practices of 'Caring Science’, developed by Jean Watson, Ph.D., RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, LL (AAN). Caring Science is a transdisciplinary approach that incorporates the art and science of nursing and includes concepts from the fields of philosophy, ethics, ecology and mind-body-spirit medicine. The Theory of Human Caring improves patient care, and reduces staff burn out (research available upon request). There are many hospitals throughout the world who are now basing their professional practice model on Watson’s Caring Science Theory. Jean and her team of Caring Science Scholars offer unique consultations with national hospital systems, nursing schools and other care-giving facilities to help embed this values based, best practice theory. Excellent quality organizations such as Stanford Health (top 3% of Hospitals Nationally) are awarded our coveted designation: 'WCSI Affiliate System'. Through deep reflective practice, our Caring Science Faculty offer unique professional development programs such as the Caritas Coach Education Program®, and the Caritas Leadership Program™️. We work globally to translate the theory into concrete human-to-human practices that help to re-pattern the culture of healthcare (and increasingly other values-led organizations) whereby leaders and managers ‘live out’ the theory in their professional and personal lives.

Congratulations to Caritas Coach Juliana Iheke, DNP (c), MSN, BSN, PHN, RN ! We love you! 🥰
This week the spotlight is on Juliana Iheke MSN, PHN, RN who embodies the Caring/Heart Science principles in her work at her medical center in San Leandro. The Caring Science Academy extends a HUGE thank you to Juliana for representing what we believe to be a true champion of Caring/Heart Science! We are so grateful to have Juliana part of our nursing family at Kaiser Permanente NCAL! Congrats on your upcoming retirement after 34 years of service at KP! When asked how she has brought Caring/Heart Science to life in her work, Juliana responded... "I also helped introduce the idea of “Center before you Enter,” meaning that before entering a patient’s room, you stop in front of the door, take a deep breath, and center yourself. This moment of calm allows you to be fully present, leaving behind any baggage or negativity so that you only take positivity with you as you meet the patient. Caring Science has deepened my caring in everything I do, not just as a Nurse Leader, but as a human being serving and caring for my local and church communities. Recently, I had a caring moment that involved running into a patient whose baby I delivered about 20 years ago. She ran up to me and said, “You delivered my baby 20 years ago! Thank you for being so nice to me all of those years ago. I’ve never forgotten about you. Can I give you a hug?” This encounter reinforced the importance of caring for our patients on a human level, not just for their physical but emotional needs. Giving birth is a moment one will never forget, and it is important to make sure that our patient feels cared for as she goes through it. Caring for someone is like a circle because someday, someone will care for you and yours".
