About us
Wave1 Performance was created to help each athlete develop an Elite Mindset. After writing his thesis on mental-health of high-performance student athletes, JT Rodgers wanted to find the most efficient way to coach and help athletes achieve their goals. Wave1 Performance developed the following coaching principles: 1. Habits Produce Character 2. Character Reflects Conviction 3. Conviction Produces Belief 4. Belief Enables Control At Wave1 Performance, it is understood that individuals have different goals for training. It doesn't matter if you are working toward finishing your first race, or are committing to put the work in to race at an elite level, We will work hard to help you reach those goals. It all starts with training your mind and following the aforementioned principles.

The Women’s 800m Freestyle was Incredible! So entertaining to watch Ledecky, Titmus, Madden, and others compete in this event. What causes burnout? Many things play a factor but not feeling valued is up there at the top of the list. I’ve specialized in helping athletes fall back in love with the sport while finding ways to prevent burnout from previous coaches or situations. It’s incredible how much truly believing in them someone helps with burnout. Yes, unrealistic goals, training indoors excessively, and micro managing often cause burnout as well. But helping each athlete feel valued, that’s a game changer. #burnout #triathlon #coaching

The second part of my Holistic Coaching Style is a BODY FIRST approach. This means the individual athlete’s feedback plays an extremely important role in adjusting the previously written plan and that trust has to be established by both the athlete and coach together to know when to dial things back to avoid risking injury, sickness, long term fatigue, etc. The days of “just push through because I said so” are a thing of the past and often ego-centric. To summarize: this approach puts the ATHLETE first. #triathlon #coaching

What is Holistic Coaching? The first part of my style of coaching is a DYNAMIC PARTNERSHIP. The days of “do it because I said so” are long gone in the coaching world. This means explaining the why behind workouts, and also valuing 2-way feedback between the athlete and myself as the coach. The goal is to foster a collaborative journey between athlete and coach that supports long term development. Also, beware of “Holistic Coaches” who use it to copy others marketing style but do not actually treat the body as the priority and are constantly sending your body into fight or flight… they are not actually taking a holistic approach 😔 #triathlon #coaching #holistic

Has your swim progression stalled? Tip #1 is the 2-2 & 2 Butterfly Drill. This is a way to start adding in more Butterfly to an athletes program. Triathletes have a tendency of over focusing on freestyle while ignoring the other 3 strokes. Now, this can backfire drastically if you have never swam fly and do not know the proper technique. So having a coach who can teach you how to efficiently swim fly is incredibly important. The 2-2 & 2 Fly drill is a great way to begin fly progression, and allows the athletes to begin learning the proper technique without completely taxing the body. Adding fins to this makes it much easier to find the fly kick rhythm. #triathlon #swimming

Does Coaching the Person (individual) matter? Obviously, certain training foundations are very important. But in addition to those, once you learn to coach people as individuals, they almost always make progress. This is especially important when guiding the individuas through life’s peaks and valleys, on and off the course. This is the 🔑 that so many (“only”) data driven coaches miss out on. It’s not “either or” but “both”. Triathlon, a sport rooted in individualism, thrives when you tailor guidance to the unique character of each person beyond the basic training foundations. Therefore, adapting the individualist coaching model is a necessity. It truly is my favorite part of coaching. #Triathlon #NCAATriathlon #TriathlonCoaching #Coaching
