  • We are excited to introduce Dr. Kevin Akiyama, PsyD, MS, our new Clinical Psychologist serving at Waiʻanae High School, Kamaile Academy, and our Adult Medicine/Behavioral Health Clinic. Dr. Akiyama brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in clinical psychology and school counseling. Dr. Akiyama’s hometown is Kaimukī, and his educational journey began at Kapiʻolani Community College and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He later earned his Master's in School Counseling from San Diego State University before completing his doctorate at The Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. Drawn by the strong sense of aloha and the unique needs here on the Waiʻanae Coast, Dr. Akiyama is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to students and adults alike. His love for this community is evident, and he looks forward to supporting mental health and well-being through his work at WCCHC. A nature enthusiast, he also enjoys people-watching, tree-hugging, and swimming with fish. Dr. Akiyama is a first-generation college graduate from a family of fishermen, farmers, and carpenters. We are thrilled to have Dr. Akiyama as part of our WCCHC ʻohana and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our patients’ lives. • Join us in celebrating our very own Ginger Fuata, First Vice Chair, and Richard Bettini, President & CEO! 🎉 We're so proud of their leadership and dedication!

AAPCHO sends our congratulations to Virginia Ginger Fuata and Richard Bettini for being recognized with Awards of Excellence at #CHIexpo24! Ginger and Rich were among community health center leaders honored for their innovation in health care delivery, high standards for patient care and quality, and leadership and advocacy that advances health equity. Ginger was honored with the Aaron L. Brown Memorial Public Service Award. Ginger is a Native Hawaiian recognized for her leadership and profound commitment to the health and prosperity of her community. Her tenure as the First Vice Chair of the Board of Directors at the WCCHC is marked by astute governance and her heart for service. She ensures the children’s welfare is at the forefront of her public service work. In her role with the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) Tribal and Indigenous Advisory Council, Ginger brings her extensive experience and perspective to bear on national issues affecting Indigenous peoples, including Hawaiian children. She assists the GAO in identifying emerging concerns, ensuring the inclusion of diverse indigenous perspectives, and shaping processes for collaboration with Tribes. Rich was honored with the John Gilbert Award. As President and CEO of Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC) in Waianae, HI, Rich steered the state’s largest federally qualified health center through the treacherous waters of a global pandemic and amplified its impact as an economic engine in the region. The health center’s response to COVID — pivoting to telehealth, developing a drive through COVID testing site, implementing the curbside delivery of medicines — became a model for others to follow. Rich’s innovative vision and bold ideas notably enhanced the delivery of comprehensive health services, breaking through socioeconomic and cultural barriers in Waianae with empathy and ingenuity. WCCHC has a diverse patient population in which more than 70 percent of patients live in poverty. AAPCHO is grateful for Ginger’s and Rich’s ongoing partnership with and support of AAPCHO, steadfast dedication to improving the health of  Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians,Pacific Islanders, and all communities served at health centers. Thank you and congratulations, Ginger and Rich! #AANHPIhealth
